Water heater LED wiring

I'm in Denver till Friday night, and there was a RadioShack across the street from my hotel. So I picked up an LED to mod my water heater switch.

For those who've done it, it's just red wire to red wire and black to black, no?

Water heater LED wiring

Thanks Mark. Your LED is a little different but I think the wiring is identical. From your photo the positive terminal is on the right and the negative on the left - I think. I guess if it doesn't work at first I can just try it the other way. In both the switches with spades and the older ones with screw pots, the arrangement appears the same- use the bottom terminals and not the top.

Rob,
It's been two years since I did the hot water LED modifications on my trailer. I would have go back and look to see for sure which led is positive or negative. Right now I am suffering from CRS.

The web page
RadioShack 12V/20mA 4mm LED with Holder (Red)
doesn't provide any useful information, but one might guess that:
  • red is positive and black is negative
  • the resistor is chosen for connection across 12V, so it should be in parallel with the appliance (switch output to ground)
The polarity is easy to check before wiring anything, just by touching leads to a power source - I don't see any risk of damaging anything.

Perfectly fine. I have that ailment often. I'll just try it the way I think it goes.

Yeah, you're right. Confirm the polarity by touching the leads to - say - a little 9V battery.

We had picked the Bigfoot 25 RQ as our long term trailer, but decided to downsize with the 19. Love that Bigfoot, who knows we might still end up in one after a couple of years on the road.
