3/8" foam backing

Okay group, this question has popped up on MRFROG.

"Insulated Interior
Fire rated, durable, soft-touch vinyl headliner with 3/8" foam backing keeps the Escape warm in the winter, and cool in the summer with easy cleaning. Thermal windows and extra insulation package available."

Do you know if the "foam backing" is closed-cell (ala Ensolite) or open-cell (like a sponge)?

Thanks!

Donna D.

Re: 3/8" foam backing

I am pretty sure it is an open cell foam, Donna. I guess Reace could confirm this.

I banged my head against it yesterday. Definitely open cell.

Thanks group. Consensus seems to be open cell. That surprises me.

Re: 3/8" foam backing

If it was a closed cell foam it would not conform to the contours of the trailer as well, especially when doubling it up. Escape gets the vinyl adhered to the foam for them by another company.

Re: 3/8" foam backing

Thanks for that Tammy, it must not be a real high density like Ensolite, because it compresses quite easily.

I Knew it! Just knew you wouldn't put something that would soak up water like a sponge on the ceiling.

Score another one for Escape!!

Re: 3/8" foam backing

Hi: All... I might be a little dense but what makes insulation work is the trapped air...so it can't be to dense. What I do know is our trailer always feels cool when you step in even parked in full sun on a hot day!!! Alf

Re: 3/8" foam backing

The 3/8" foam backing is an open cell foam. Donna, I appologize for the confusion, Tammy asked and I answered without really thinking about what she asked......man that can get a guy into trouble sometimes! At any rate, everyone is correct that a closed cell foam is dense and would not form to the trailer walls as nicely.

Re: 3/8" foam backing

Thanks for the clarification Reace. I'm just trying to help a bunch of owners with older trailers that had Ensolite. That was definitely closed-cell, vinyl covered foam. I'll stay on the hunt.

Re: 3/8" foam backing

Donna, I believe the ensolite used on the older units was actually a neoprene backing. Talking with Tom from Trillium RV, it was rather inexpensive back then and only 1/4"....not so cheap now tho.

Re: 3/8" foam backing

So what does 3/8" open cell foam mean in terms of R value and what is the R value for the optional insulation package? DavidWW

Re: 3/8" foam backing

The 3/8 foam headliner alone provides an R5 insulation value. The extra insulation we now use is Reflectix foil bubble insulation which is listed to have an R14 insulation value. Now combined with the regular headliner material, do we have an R19? I won't go that far....but is is certainly much better than an R5.
