wire brushes do a good job stripping off bulk rust, too. but those 'flapper' wheels for a 4.5" angle grinder work really good and fast and easy. they strip old paint off steel too, gets right down to shiny metal in a hurry. I typically use the 60 grit dewalt zircon stripper wheel

I used the POR 15 products 3 summers ago on all the exposed steel except the springs after wire brushing what I could. Rust hasn't come back and the Top Coat has withstood road stones a lot better then whatever the factory puts on. Still some chips in it, but not many.

Messy stuff to use.

Haven't used a wheel so can't comment on that choice, but I agree that paint-on product is more long lived than the spray on variety. It has lasted three years vs. one for the spray on product.

For those of you that have used the POR-15, did you use the full 3 step method, including the Cleaner Degreaser, Metal Prep, and POR-15? Seems like a fair bit of prep work, but if it produces a better resultant, I am more than willing to do it.

I used all the steps but my frame was showing a fair amount of rust. Didn't take much of the first step, 3 little cans the 2nd, and under a QT of top coat. That's for doing everything, including the pin box.

After awhile, I let the rust stay. I think just about every rv being used on the road has some rust and I do not worry about some surface rust as long as nothing structural is involved.

Only two years old, and mine is showing a bit of rust in lots of locations. I should likely do everything so it is protected, and will do all the steps.

I have read and watched lots that used the small cans, saying it is near impossible to reopen and reuse the rest of a larger can. Did you find this to be the case, or did you just do it all in one fell swoop?

They're right Jim. If any of that stuff gets on the rim of the lid seal (it will) it will permanently seal the lid on. A real PITA to take off.

It looks like there's a good reason that POR-15 (the paint) comes in a six-pack of little cans.

As long as we're wishing, I'll hold out for an aluminum frame - fully boxed and gusseted.

Galvanized frames are usually not painted with anything. U-Haul typically uses galvanized frames (for durability in rental duty), galvanized utility trailers are common, and so are galvanized boat trailers (due to the obvious rust issue), but galvanized frames are rare under travel trailers. I don't think I've ever seen any of them with paint or powder-coat, and I would be fine with unpainted if I had a galvanized trailer frame.

Essentially, zinc coating (which is what galvanizing is) is an alternative to paint or powder coat. It is possible to paint galvanized steel, but it takes a lot of prep work or the paint will peel. Paint or powder coat over galvanized would be an expensive finish.

I've hauled a lot of powder-coated lawn furniture to the dump, and it was never used on gravel roads.

It's built on a boat trailer, no?

Yep, my Hauley frame is galvanized. After 5 years it's showing some rust.

Glenn, sometimes you really take the cake! But in this situation, did you take the rolling pin or the frying pan (across your noggin)?

Mucram, when you get that wet dog smell, you should consider showering.... LOL

I used the small cans, so I had 6. And yes, the cans seem to be single use, as are whatever you use for brushes. I could not reopen once closed.

Yes, it is currently listed as galvanized in the Lil' Snoozy FAQ.

It isn't actually a boat trailer (it doesn't have bunks, winch, etc), but it is built in some ways like a boat trailer, by a company (Wesco) which builds mostly boat trailers, and it includes some features which are typical of boat trailers... including surge brakes and a galvanized frame. Of all the Wesco products, the Snoozy frame looks closest to their utility trailer (although of course without the sides or ramp).
