The truck's charging system will not produce the optimum voltage to charge the trailer battery. It can produce enough voltage and far more than enough current, it just is not set up to do what the trailer battery needs, rather than the truck battery. The advantage of using a separate battery charger is that is it does put out what is needed for the battery to which it is connected.

If you want to avoid needing to use an inverter to produce the 120V AC that ordinary chargers need, you can buy a charger which runs on 12V DC... but they're relatively uncommon and thus expensive. Although not direct and not highly efficient, the inverter+charger setup is functional and (especially with this inverter already in the truck) readily available.
