Wow Jim, Just as I am about to arrange delivery on my 21' after a delay, move, and all, we finally got a slot, submitted the build, and she is about complete! I long debated the 5.0ta as well. It is a great rig.

What is your new tow vehicle, I know you were wondering about pin weight and all. Looking forward to the process of your decision, I always learn alot from you.

Don, I have a 2014 Ram 1500 quad cab, 5.7 hemi with 8 speed and 3:21 rear end, "sport" model with all led lights. When is your pickup?

Back to the 5.0 specific questions, the landing gear are not synchronized so each one needs to be lowered independent of one another, correct. But you do not need to raise the front like the pull behind, you merely lower each side and unhitch and pull forward. No up and down like with the pull being A frame jack set up, correct.

Pretty much. You raise the front off the hitch, unlock the hitch, open tailgate, pull forward, drop the front to level.

Just finalizing paperwork, and we are looking at a delivery of February/March. With the new job I don't have the time to make the drive out and back.

Nice new Tug! What is they payload?

Jim, this is a standard 5th wheel hitch, don't know the sequence for the Anderson.

With a trailer, the tongue jack lowers both sides, with the 5.0, you lower each side separately? Do you go back and forth with your adjustments, seems like having both switches in one location would be helpful?

Both switches are in the same location. Most of the time I operate them simultaneously and only make minor independent adjustments for leveling.

ok, that would make sense. Are both controls located on both sides or just one?
Mike,
do you miss using your truck bed and does your Ram handle the 5.0 nicely?

Jim, the switches are only on the driver side. As for my truck bed, I still use it. I put all of my camping gear in the bed while connected, and still have room to spare. I think there is a misconception that you lose the bed with a fifth wheel. The RAM 5.7 handles the 5.0 TA without any issues, but still am considering upgrading to a 2500, but that will most likely be several years down the road as I want to put at least 200K on my 1500. Also, I want to see what the industry introduces in the future, such as the XD Titan...

Any issues with the bed squatting? Right now with 500 lbs tongue weight I'm just about level,
adding another 2-300 lbs may make me sag, but then again it is over the axles so that may compensate.

Smile Insulating Cover and Shelf

Jim, having lived with a truck camper for 12 years with a surprisingly similar loft layout, I guessed right that the ETI escape hatch would come with a cover. It is a relatively thin, soft material velcroed around the entire edge, thus covering the entire hatch including the trim. I learned my lesson in the truck camper years ago the first time I left off the snap-on vinyl cover in cold weather. The metal trim dripped condensation right in my face one morning. The hatch makes a great spot to search for the aurora during the night without getting out of a warm bed. My more clever half taught me this trick.

Re. installing a shelf between the overheads at the head of the bed, in my judgment a shelf would not fit as one would be bumping their head into the shelf, and it would take away from some of the 80" bed length. Cliff

Jim, as you can see in the attached photo, there is a slight sag when fully loaded, nothing to be concerned about in my opinion.

What size furnace is now in the 5.0? The website mentions 12,000 but but that was the old one?

Jim, I'm not sure but will look it up later today or tomorrow. I can say this, we've camped when the temp was in the teens, (our city water line froze) however, warmth inside was a non issue.

Several discussions have included references to three heights for the 5.0TA suspension, and to have that there would need to be two sets of holes in the leaf spring mounts to the frame... but early photos showed only one set. It sounds like they did end up with two sets.

If only the middle mount (where the rocker attaches) has multiple holes, then the height change will be half of the hole spacing (and the springs will change angle undesirably when the height is changed). If all mounts have multiple holes, then it's six bolts to change the height, and the height change equals the hole spacing.

The conversion between spring-under-axle and spring-over axle provides a large (roughly 10 cm or 4 inches) change in height. This is separate from a change by using different mounting points.

The springs aren't "flipped over", they're moved between positions above or below the axle beam. Even the beam isn't flipped (because it has a definite top and bottom side due to a deliberate arch in the beam); Escape gets the axles with spring mounting pads on both bottom and top of the beam so the spring position can be changed without having to weld anything and without buying any additional parts (other than the U-bolts and nuts, which should be replaced whenever they are removed).
