Hi: All... Kudo's to Reace for all his attention to this Dometic dilemma!!! I have just plugged the hole in the bottom of the 6.7 door. My son had some Backer Rod ,extruded foam roll, that fills a space before putting in some caulking. We fashioned a plug and stuffed it into the hole... then made a piece of aluminium tape (Real Duct Tape) to cover the plug.
The door has no latch rod slot in it, ( non reversible door) but we didn't see any insulation either. That's not to say there isn't any... just didn't see any up there thru the small hole!!! Alf

Guess I've joined the ranks of the unhappy. 3 days on the road, temp slowly creeping up. High today is 20 and 53. Tried gas, battery, and had 120vac last night. Very little drop overnight. Just tossed some food and bought a cooler. Day time temps mid 70's thru mid 80's Ma. to Il.

Pull your freezer if you can live without it and maybe you can at least keep the fridge cool. Run on 120 overnight if you have hook ups. I have found it works better then propane which don't make since but I get a lot better cooling from it.

Did you put tape over the hole in the bottom of the door?

I'll do the tape now.

I think my fridge is fine. My final fridge temperature test. After today, after all the sweating, strategizing, poking and probing, I am done. No more experiments. These are the facts, they cannot be argued.

Test area working environment:

1. empty 4.3 Dometic RM 8551
2. on shore power, first 5 dots, then 4 dots, as indicated
3. no special baffles in the back
4. two factory installed fans in back
5. freezer compartment removed
6. door latch air leak plugged
7. shower curtain draped down from top shelf
8. my little fan installed on bottom shelf facing down
Fri Aug 29: After several days with the fridge door left open, shore power is turned on, at 3 PM, to 5 dots, and fridge door is closed. Readings at this start point are 78.7° F inside the fridge and 79.7° F on the countertop.

The inside fan (see #8 above) is off.

5 PM, two hours later, readings are 55.3° F inside fridge, 83.9° F on countertop.
8 PM, readings 44.0° F inside fridge, 79.7° F on countertop.

At this moment I drop the power down to 4 dots.

Sat 30 Aug: Readings at 11 AM are 34.4° F inside fridge, 70.0° F on countertop. At this point I open door for 2 seconds to turn on my fan.

Trailer is out in full sun all day.

2:30 PM readings inside fridge are 37.4° F and it is 84.4° on countertop. While I am writing down these figures I hear another fan sound suddenly begin. I go outside to the fridge vent and sure enough, that sound is the two factory installed fans suddenly come active. These fans remain on for about a minute.

At 2:34 PM I then move the thermometer prime sensor from the countertop to outside, placed in full sun.

By 3:30 when next I checked, it showed an outside reading of 113.9° F. Temperature inside the fridge was 38.7° F.

We leave for the Tetons in a few days. Will be mostly on propane then. Hoping for the best.

Hi All...

What are the chances that two 5.0 TA's would appear at the same CG? Well it's happened. And where... the KOA in Deadwood, SD & the resting place of Wild Bill Hickok (not to mention Calamity Jane). Must be the "Aces & Eights"...

Day after we arrived, Bob & Linda (from Edmonton) pulled in with their newly acquired TA (just a week old for them) but #5, because they bought R&T's unit. Get's even scarier... we had never met before, but as it turns out I worked with Linda's Dad for years and know him quite well. Maybe all these Lakota spirits in the Black Hills have some merit after all... or is it the "ghosts" of Wild Bill & Calamity?

Or maybe on the road too long... as of today... three months... & 8,000 miles. West Coast to East Coast & now heading back West.

Okay, back to fridges... knock on wood... but so far our fridge has worked GREAT In talking to Bob, their's, so far has worked just fine as well. His only disappointment... flame goes out when running on propane as they travel. We, on the other hand, have not had that problem, because we run with the fridge OFF at all times I have asked Bob to keep me informed as to how their fridge works, because after all, this is the same unit that R&T had trouble with.

When it comes to our travels, so far the only thing we feel that we haven't run into is "pestilence", although having said this, I may have just "jinked" us by saying so.

So, no fans, no extra seals, holes in the freezer compartment, etc. But then again, one never knows...

Travel Safe,
Larry & Emily

So far while traveling each day, fridge temps go up to about 20 and 53 by the afternoon with fridge on gas, at night down to 8/37 on gas and 14/40 with electric by morning. Ambient temps roughly the same. Hole plugged yesterday, no noticable difference so far. Will run it on battery for today's travels.

Hi: All... Further to the continued saga of "Dometic Dilemma"... Ran the fridge on 12V while driving the 300 miles home from Ottawa. At 50 mph on hwy#7. the fridge ran fine, but the weather up north was cooler. In S.W. Ontario the temp. got up to 33*C. and the fridge was on the sunny side all the way along the 401@ 60mph. 60 mi. from home and it was up to 50* in the fridge.
I placed a bag of ice cubes in the bottom of the fridge. This am early there's still ice in the bag...and the fridge temp is down to 35* on 120V?? What's going on?? I'm thinking not enough insulation and too much hot air passing thru the fridge vent while driving!!! Very Strange.
Fridge runs fine while stationary... but not while towing? Maybe I should plug the gap under the fridge unit with some of the 5/8" backer rod or styrofoam board? Alf

I wonder if keeping the MaxxFan open while traveling may be causing a venturi effect and pulling warm air thru the side refer vent. I'm going to tow mine this week and keep my vent closed and record the results.

While I did a number of modifications to the 5 cu ft fridge in my 17, the one that seemed to provide the most help at keeping the flame lit while driving was to add a furnace filter to the inside of the lower grill. I used a very open mesh filter...

The other think that helped was to completely seal the back of the fridge.

Hi: markvt... Confirms my findings only more scientific. The flue behind the fridge is hot to the roof. That space on a dewy morning is always dry... so it's working as it should.
The bottom right corner of the door leaked a lot. I plugged the hole in the door and I have now added a strip of peal n stick foam along the bottom of the fridge cavity, behind the screwed on wood strip, to help with air intrusion from out side under the fridge. Doing all I can to stem the flow of cold air!!! Alf
