Actual Weight 15B
Just got back from 2,600 miles of travel to California and back. Thought we'd stop by the local waste control and weigh car and trailer while we were loaded and then come back and weight the car. Got 7,460 pounds for both and 4,620 pounds for the Santa Fe making a difference of 2,840. Both holding are empty and fresh is 1/3 full. I thought that was high so I thought I'd look again at the sticker. The "official" sticker says dry weight is 1,560 KG (NOT POUNDS!) That would make it almost twice as much in pounds. The Escape web site says the 15B dry weight is 1,560 POUNDS. So which is it? Kilograms or Pounds? We have max maybe 300 pounds of stuff inside which would still make the trailer 2,500 pounds not 1,560 pounds. What are other people's ACTUAL weights?

Hi , we have a 15A .... your post just had us go out and check what the official sticker says , you will likely have a few pounds more than ours but not that much , however ours says dry weight 720 kg - but just above that it gives the vehicle rating ,which is 1590 ..... Could be confusing at a glance ?

Hmmm ... Don't think I'm confused since there is no 720 any place. No duplicate numbers. See pic. Still I'm talking actual weights and 2500 is a lot more than 1800.

1 kilogram is equal to 2.20462262185 lbs
1 Pound is equal to 0.45359237 kilogram
GAWR 1590KG = 3505lb Total Axle Weight Restriction
Cargo Carry Capacity 523KG = 1153lbs (includes full cold and hot water 198 + 60 = 258lbs)
Fresh water cold 90KG = 198lbs
Fresh water hot 27KG = 60 lbs
Waste Water Tanks Full 204KG = 450lbs (Grey and Black Water)
GAWR - Cargo Carry Capacity = trailer empty weight (with what ever your options weigh included in this)
3505 - 1153 = 2352 lbs or 1065.85 Killograms
Based on my calculation of the placard above, seems like the number are pretty close. I would go with what is on the placard and it says Kgs. Converting it to pounds, sounds like you are pretty much right on target with your actual weights as measured by the scale. I would stick with the Kgs as that is what is on the offical placard.

Boy oh boy, I have been lying to everyone and telling them my 15A weighed about 1600 pounds dry (according to the Escape website). Since I tow with a pretty big truck it doesn't make any difference to me, but this has been a real eye-opener.
Thanks, Tim and Julie, for picking up on this.

So, with a Empty Weight + Gear Weight Aproximation + 1/3 Tanks we are looking at this...
2352lbs + 300lbs + 86lbs = 2738lbs as loaded. The scale said 2840lbs. A 102lb difference. Not too far off.
I have found so minor descrepencies on the Escape Website. Just let Tammy know and she will fix them promptly.

I always figured my 17b weighed in at 3000 lbs loaded for a trip. Probably another 300 lbs in the truck and me and the Mrs.

I actually weight my 17B before each trip. I'm not sure why, but packed for a 4 1/2 month trip it weighed in at 3010 lbs, and packed for a 1 month trip 3020 lbs. In any case, I highly recommend weighing both the trailer & the hitch once packed before every trip. Anything else is just a guess, and if you tow with a 3500/350 lb rated vehicle, you want to have a better idea than a guess.

The placard information is pretty clear, with no confusion of units. As Newnan transcribed above, the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and Gross Axle Weight Rating are each shown as 1590 kg, or about 3500 pounds. Note that a rating is the highest that these weights are allowed to be, not what they will be with an empty trailer - it is not a "dry weight".

What I see on the Specifications tab of the 15 Foot Escape page is
Quote:
Approx. Total dry weight... 1750 lbs (Plan B)
|
That's 1750 pounds, not 1560 pounds.
This still leaves half a ton between the advertised dry weight and the as-towed loaded weight. Possible origins of this difference include: - scale error (the calculated 2840 pounds could be 20 pounds or more off, high or low)
- optional equipment
- water
- propane
- heavier build than expected
- cargo (including sewer hose, water hose, etc)
I would weigh the empty trailer after the trip (and either drain the water heater or realize that it contains 27 kg of water).

Techfan's placard shows 523 kg of cargo carrying capacity, in addition to 90 kg of cold water in the tank and 27 kg of hot water in the heater, which implies that the dry trailer weighs no more than 1590 - 523 - 90 -27 = 950 kg (or about 2090 lb), probably allowing for all possible options.
The 15A has the same size fresh water tank but no water heater, so it should show less 27 kg allowance for hot water and more cargo carrying capacity. Is the 15A's "720 kg" on the placard really the dry weight, or is it the cargo carrying capacity? Dry weight is not normally shown on the placard showing required information about the vehicle. 1590 kg GVWR minus 90 kg of water and 720 kg of cargo carrying capacity would leave a maximum of 780 kg (1716 lb) of dry and empty trailer, which seems plausible for a 15A with all options.
I am interested to hear what other Escape 15 owners have found their weight to actually be, and what version (A or B), optional equipment, water, and other stuff that might include. Dry and empty is ideal, but I don't expect many people actually drag their trailer to scale for that like I did (but mine's still an old Boler, so I can't contribute useful data here).

I know it can be a pain to arrange, but it might help if you could post a photo of your placard, like techfan did of his.

Just to clarify, yes there is a 1560 lb weight on the 15 spec, but it's not for the dry weight of the entire trailer, just the dry AXLE weight, add the 190 lbs for dry hitch weight and there is the 1750 lb. total dry weight.

The listed weights do not include options or fluids...
This is quoted on the Escape Industries page on the "The Escape" tab:
Does Escape Trailer Industries list real 'Dry Weights' for their travel Trailers?
Yes, When we refer to the Dry Weight of our trailers we weigh a finished trailer with just the Standard Features installed. You can view the Standard Features List on our Products Page.
15' Escape, Plan A has a dry weight of 1,600lbs.
15' Escape, Plan B (Bathroom) has a dry weight of 1,750lbs.
17' Escape, Plan A has a dry weight of 1,900lbs.
17' Escape, Plan B (Bathroom) has a dry weight of 2,100lbs.
19' Escape has a dry weight of 2,500lbs
Escape 5.0 Fifth Wheel has a dry weight of 2,620lbs.

Now I'm confused. Hasn't it been concluded that the the weights listed on the Escape Industries website should be kilograms and not pounds?

No.
- The placard is in kilograms, as legally required in Canada.
- The Escape Trailer Industries website uses pounds, perhaps because that is what is more familiar to many customers and typical in the U.S.-dominated RV industry.
Bigfoot RV also builds moulded fiberglass travel trailers in Canada, and lists both pounds and kilograms, which I would prefer.
Some members here were just confused because they were comparing one source of information about dry and empty weight with another source of information about maximum loaded weight, and guessing that confusion of units might explain the different numbers, rather than realizing that they are different information.
Both the website and the placard include GVWR and GAWR, but - the website provides dry/empty weight not shown on the placard, and
- the placard provides CCC and tank content weights not shown on the website.

This is not a lie. It probably does weigh about 1600 pounds dry, or would without options. Of course, you don't go on vacation with none of the options installed, no water, no propane, and none of your stuff in the trailer!

Good summary Newnan. Just a couple of comments:

|
Cargo Carrying Capacity is calculated with the freshwater tank and water heater full, so that's 523 kg (1153 lb) in addition to 117 kg (258 lb) of water.
So...

The empty and dry trailer weight will be no more than
GVWR - CCC - water
= 3505 - 1153 - 258
= 2094 lb (or 952 kg)
I say "no more than" because the placard numbers are limits, and to avoid re-calculating them for every unit, it is normal for vehicle manufacturers to work these out for the worst case, which in this instance would mean allowing for the weight of a trailer with every available option.
