Warm temperatures with very strong winds here today. Snow is melting like crazy and wind is wreaking havoc with power lines and other facilities. Power has gone off and on several times in the office. If you had your awning out on a day like today, there would be a good chance that it would blow right off of your trailer, even with the flapper trappers on.

Soooo, bottom line, which de-flapper is best suited for the Escape 19'?

Jim sent me pictures of his on his 19, so it appears that the placement of the safety catch on the 19 does NOT interfere with the placement of the Carefree product. HOWEVER, with the ever changing nature of products there is probably no guarantee for the next person. I HAVE figured out how to mount the ones I have on my 15 and I will post pictures when it is done. I will use the same hole (which is still uncovered) required for the rivet and I will rotate the clamp up instead of down. I will have to drill one hole for the threaded knob screw to rest in.

I'm interested in your photos, Tim, as I've purchased the same clamps as you did.

Ok folks, the weather turned nice today and I pulled the awning out and installed the Carefree Awning Clamps. The hole for the rivet is not covered by the locking levers but the hole for the screw is. I measured the distance to the old one and drilled a hole on the other side. (It is not threaded, it is just a hole for the threads to sit in.) The directions called for hammering the rivet in, but I decided it would be better if I just used a "C" clamp to push the rivet into place. The only difference now is that the clamps swing "up" when they are not being used. It seems to work fine and you can see in the pictures that it does not touch the trailer side. My only observation is that the clamp sits below the arm and actually pulls the awning down a little when clamped. Other awning clamps (e.g. the velcro ones) would center themselves on the arm and be more in line with the tarp itself. Still these are convenient since they are always attached.

What is wrong with the conventional awning de-flapper? Amazon.com: Camco 42061 Awning De-Flapper: Automotive

I think they would probably flap around if not removed prior to traveling.

Well yes, you only use them as needed, but why a permanent install?

I do like that the Carefree on stays in place while travelling, to me that would be favourable. No having to find it and pull it out when needed. That Camco one does not look to bad though. I can't find a source to buy the Carefree one here in Canada though, and Amazon.com does not ship here. The Camco one can be bought a couple blocks away at Canadian tire.

It's one more thing I don't have to remember where I put it. You must be a lot younger than I am. You'll understand someday

Truth is, it never occurred to me that I might need a de-flapper. I guess when the wind comes up enough, I close the awning partially or fully.

Sometimes it does not have to be a strong wind, just a moderate breeze at the right angle, and it gets the awning edge flapping. This of holding that blade of grass between your thumbs, and blowing.

The nice thing about the portable straps is the ability to use them as a back up security awning tie back. I do not trust those plastic restrainers on the awning, by using these as a backup the awning is less apt to open unintended.

We use these and they're perfect. I had to buy a longer velcro strip for one side, but it works a treat. I actually have 2 per side for really windy days, but typically I use one per side and put the awning down if it all gets out of control!

Anyone have one they can report on? I see on eBay some hand-held models in the fifteen to twenty-bucks range, and of course, there is the seventy to two-hundred dollar ones, which I doubt I would break wind over.
Our one wind experience in New Mexico was at the Abiquiu Reservoir. We put up our awning on our pop-up and went for a walk. Just as we returned, the camp hostess came running up to say we ought to take it down. We did and by late afternoon the wind was blowing so hard, we had to tie down a neighbor's tent that was threatening to blow away with her sleeping bag and pad inside. She was very appreciative.

I'm going to install mine permanently, one less thing to store and one less thing to misplace.

awning deflapper

I've used the camco max on large awnings and now I use two of the small ones on my Escape size awnings. I keep them in my plastic storage box for awning items, ie. tie downs straps when the wind might pick up and also the bungees to use on our sun screens. The deflappers really do work and the awning doesn't wake me and our neighbors at 2 a.m. The one time a thunder storm lifted a few awnings off RV's they didn't save mine, it just pulled screws out and laid it over the top of the motorhome.
I guess we shouldn't go downtown in the afternoon when in the mountains and thunderstorms might be expected.
