I’m looking at the “Battery Tender Junior” – will that have enough charging power to keep the batteries “topped up”? And do I need to be concerned with opening a window or something while the batteries are charging?
Battery manufactures say it doesn't matter if you put them on concrete anymore, but I always put them on a board out of habit. I would get a good battery hydrometer and check the batteries every month or two (you really only need to check a couple of cells since they should not have a bad cell). A digital voltmeter will work too, but I really like a hydrometer. I would rather use a regular battery charger every couple of months rather than a tender since it will put more of a charge in the battery and help stir up the acid. Do you have a 5-10 amp charger? I would not charge the batteries where open flame was around (ie. a furnace in the room) since a battery makes hydrogen gas (remember the Hindenburg) Do you have a garage? Batteries actually do better in a cool environment rather than a really warm one although your basement probably is not too warm. If you only have a basement then opening a window a touch wouldn't hurt. Just make sure you ALWAYS have the battery charger turned off (preferably unplugged) when hooking or unhooking the charger, otherwise KABOOM (Don't ask me how I know). Just my 2 cents worth.

Trojan Batteries site FAQ will answer questions you never even thought to ask.
The myth about storing batteries on concrete is at the very bottom. Never occurred to me to feed my batteries aspirin for instance.
