Battery Boxes

Can any 17B owners with the dual 6 volt batteries on the rear frame tell me the circumference of one box including the frame it sits on? I am trying to figure out how much chain or cable (48"?) I need to use around each box and frame as a theft deterrent.

Thanks Jon! Do you use cable/chain with locks on your battery boxes?

I don't, and have never even thought about it. Are you worried about them being stolen while camping, or while at home? We have never had a problem, and we have camped in Alberta, BC, Washington, Oregon and California. I think you are fine while in parks, but depending where you keep your trailer when at home, I guess there could be a potential for theft.

While I do put a hitch lock on the trailer when I'm away from it, I don't lock the batteries. Hasn't been a problem over the last two years...

I agree, unless you store it at an unworthy location, campgrounds and at home should be fine.

Thank you for your responses! While I will keep my trailer in an indoor storage unit that does have an alarm system and cameras, I have read about many instances of battery theft (in parks and storage) on some of the other forums. Just trying to protect my investment and make my batteries a little more difficult to take.

People might be less interested in stealing a 6 volt battery if it were clearly labeled as such.

Well, if your two 6-volt batteries are anything like ours, the thief would have to be a pretty skookum individual to first, lift one out of its box, and second run very far with it. They must weigh at least 30-40 pounds each and they have no handles. It would be pretty tough to steal them, in my opinion. I have a hard time getting them out myself. Also, we don't leave our batteries in the trailer over the winter while in storage. We put them on a battery conditioner that slowly discharges them slightly and then re-charges them. Cycling the batteries helps extend their useful life.

Doug, you can go to a battery store, and they will likely just give you a lifting strap that makes the battery removal way easier. I know I got one this spring when I bought new batteries, and both is it handy.

I just carried our 6volts from the storage room in our basment to the trailer in the driveway and that strap would have been handy, I thought I had put webbing straps in ours but it must have been our old batteries. I would guess them to be closer to 50 lbs each not 30 lbs. Has any one weighed a 6 volt? Ours are already in the front storage box and all hooked up and although I am currious how much they weigh I am not that currious to take them back out

I believe that Escape uses Interstate U2200 batteries, at least that is what is in my trailer. Weight - 62 lbs each. Interstate Battery Info:

I hope they put us a long way from Jim at the rally. He scares me!! LOL

And yes, those are the same ones we have in our 19. I'm going to have to put on a kidney belt next time I take them out !

For a battery strap I found my old bike tubes work great, the fatter tubes are a little harder to thread but will also work. Snip out the valve area, feed through where the webbing would go and tie them in a knot. The stretch of the tube makes for an easier lift.

Be careful not to drop them on your feet, Jim's weight numbers are correct, they are heavy.

One of these straps is what the battery shop gave me. They work on the stock batteries too.

A length of 7mm "prussik" cord also works nicely. I just thread it through the holes that are on the top of my batteries. I don't known if all batteries have these. Thieves probably have a system!
