Battery Question

It is time to get the trailer ready to go. You take your battery off the shelf and start to ponder, "If my trailer is plugged in, as I do some cleaning and preparation, why should I spend hours with the battery on the trickle charger? Why not just put it in the battery box?" I have always charged and now I am wondering if it is really necessary. The battery charges while plugged in at the campground. What should I do?

Re: Battery Question

Mine was in the battery box and plugged in all winter. I should check the water levels. I'd charge it in the box and turn the fridge on so it's good and cold for your trip.

Re: Battery Question

Yes, but at the West Coast you don't have to worry about a frozen battery. I don't know why I always put my battery on the trickle charger, somebody must have told me or I imagined someone told me. I have the battery on the charger now, so I will slap it in tomorrow. Thanks for always being there to field my questions.

Re: Battery Question

It really depends on how long your trailer is stored. A few weeks or even a month I would do nothing special but if it where 3-6 months I would put it on trickle charger as you have been doing. The charger built into the trailer could over charge your battery and boil out the electrolite or do other harm if just left plugged in indefinitly. However with a good maintence free battery this is less an issue. Also some chargers use "smart technology" to monitor the batteries needs. Not sure if the charger Escape uses is that type, but I doubt it. Suggest a call to Escape.
