A controller is absolutely essential to tow any of the Escape products. They can put one in your vehicle or your local RV place can do it before you pick up your rig. I'd suggest you Google "brake controller reviews" before deciding which one you want. I have a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 and am very happy with it. It also gets very favorable reviews.
Last year when I bought a new trailer (not an Escape - but did look long and hard at a 19') the dealer supplied a Hayes time delay brake controller - it worked but was not happy with it. In the spring I bought a Tekonsha P3 proportional and this is the way to go. It may be a few dollars more, but well worth it as it has numerious options to taylor your trailer and towing needs.
