Camp fire, rain, and tarps.

I'm just curious.
If it was necessary (you want to) to have a fire, and it's raining, how do you tarp your site? or don't you?

Deploy the awning. Plug in the Campfire in a Can, or Fire Dancer to the external propane connect (option) and expect a crowd!

We often tie a rope to a tree, about 10' up, and tie the other end to a staked out (with two big stakes) tall pole, and pulled super tight. On this rope we string a couple 16x12 tarps lapped by about a foot (depending on grommet location. The four corners then get an adjustable pole under each on, either staked out or tied to a tree. We often have 12-16 people under it, staying dry, playing guitar, and possibly imbibing in a drink or two.

Not sure I have a photo of this set up, but we did set one up just over a month ago, and a friend used a piece of a solid fuel rocket engine to get it going. Here is the video I took of it.

We have done this many a time during the day, for a rain storm or shower. We usually pull a large picnic table in, and have 10 people sitting at it chatting. Not usually an evening thing though, as a campfire is always required, and I am not building one under my awning, tarps are easily replace.

Personally, I use the "Fire Dancer" propane campfire that Donna mentioned...in any weather and under my awning. It gets very hot, uses little propane and we use it to toast marshmallows.

You don't have a chance unless you have a center-line for that tarp. I carried 100' lengths of poly rope and I had the head from a 2 lb sledge or 16 oz. lead fishing weights. I would attach a weight to one end of the line, have loose coils so it would travel, and then heave the line over the highest branch I could reach. The fishing weight would carry the line back down to me. I 'd wrap the end of the line around the trunk of the tree several times to secure it. Then lay the tarp over the line, which is on the ground leading to another tree, and toss the weight again. It usually took somebody pulling on the rope and another pushing up ( with a canoe paddle or whatever you have ) to raise the tarp ( because of friction and weight. Another wrap around the second tree trunk several times and then you can start tying off the corners. Main thing is, the center line is a couple feet over your head.
