Captain lights

Can anyone tell me if the captain lights swivel/rotate to where they point straight down or are they always on an angle? I'm thinking of replacing the stock under cabinet lights with these type but want to know if they can be positioned for maximum illumination? Thanks

Yes they can be pointed straight down. We have four in our 19 and are quite happy with them.

would you substitute them for the under cabinet lights?

I don't think I would: Compare the function of a spot light with a flood light. The LEDs are very bright (too bright for the dinette area IMO) as it is.

I agree. The under-cabinet lights are much more diffuse (we have the Escape LED units). I don't think the captain lights would work well over the table, etc.

I put some in right after getting our trailer, on each corner at the head of the bed. Because they are so directional, they work great for reading when your partner is trying to sleep.

I really can't see using them anywhere else. For those of you with more than the two, where did you put them, and for what intended task?

The stock Captain's lights are not very directional (light cone is pretty wide) and Karen is correct: if you plan on performing surgery, the LED package will do just fine. Try to find something on a gooseneck that can be pointed anywhere you want. Reace will gladly put them in.

Another consideration, which may or may not be important to you, is the visual impact of having ten or so lights hanging down. While there is a huge difference between the 15 and 21, I was concerned about this so eliminated the stove hood and had as much of the electronics installed below in order to provide as clean a run and as little clutter of upper cabinets as possible.

I found that I only used the one cabinet middle light over the dinette and the two on the stove, never turned on the others in the 19'. I used couple of small 120v lights when I had power, one on the dinette and one in the bed area. The under cabinet do put out a lot of light, maybe too bright. I would keep the o/h lights but maybe switch out a couple of the under cabinets for these in the corners, I'm doing the "U" dinette in the 21' and will use these in the corners and eliminate the ones on each side in the middle?

The light at the foot of our bed has never been on, but all the rest got used. The weak spot for us was over the dinette, Escape was not offering a light there when we got our trailer. I added one in myself (following the idea of someone else here) and boy, is it nice.
