I didn't realize the mirror wasn't glass, but since I don't (yet) own an Escape I suppose that stands to reason. And, from the manufacturers position I could understand why they wouldn't want to mount a large glass mirror where someone could fall into it and possibly be seriously cut.
However, the mirror in my 1988 Scamp is the original from the factory and has never broken or been damaged. It's a "closet" mirror in a frame and screwed to the outside closet door. I suppose you could change out your phony mirror for a real one.
PS: if the mirror you have makes you look thinner... I'll buy it... how much $
