Converter is 'Ringing'

Hi Folks! I am sure you can help me with this as I’m stumped.

Our power converter is whistling -- or at least it is more of a constant ringing or some kind of alarm. The unit was plugged into electricity and now it is unplugged and still rings. Before it was unplugged, The error code E1 'reverse polarity' had occurred when plugged in. So we unplugged it and it still is ringing. The battery is fully charged. What am I missing? Could it be the solar? I am assuming it isn’t good and it is definitely annoying.

Your insights are appreciated! Phil

Error code E1 is indeed reversed polarity (hot and neutral reversed). Try shutting off all power at the battery cutoff for a minute to delete the error code, turn battery power back on, and it should clear with E0. If it doesn't, there's probably a wiring issue. In that case, call Progressive Industries as Bob mentioned above.

I'm a bit confused, I deleted my post, Phil looks to be talking about the converter as opposed to the EMS (Electrical Management System) my post was for. The error codes would seem to indicate the EMS.

Which is it Phil?

That error message is the EMS telling you there is a wiring issue at the cg, unplug and tell the owner ASAP.

Sorry, I think cg is common ground. I'm not an electrical person, can you familiarize me a bit with what is a cg?

Thanks so much.

Thank you! I'm slowly coming up to speed on electrical issues. I called Progressive and they are very helpful. Thank you for alerting me to a severe issue.

He means campground Phil. The shore power polarity was apparently reversed.

Did the EMS reset after shutting off/turning on BATTERY power?

  • An Electrical Management System is sort of a surge protector plus; it is not the converter
  • The one installed by Escape is the Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C
The installation guide and operating instructions document is linked on that web page.
  • Error code E1 is labelled 'reverse polarity', but AC ('alternating current', in contrast to DC or 'direct current') power doesn't have a polarity; as Robert explained it is actually the hot (normally black insulation) and neutral (normally white insulation) wires reversed.
    • Lots of AC-powered systems work fine with the two reversed, but it can be unsafe, because the neutral (and only the neutral) is supposed to be bonded (connected) to ground at one point in the system.
    • Some campground ("cg") wiring is pretty bad; in this case the outlet was apparently wired incorrectly, reversing these two wires.
    • If the EMS has always reported E0 when plugged in - to different sources of power - the wires could be reversed within the trailer. If it only reports E0 when plugged into a particular campsite receptacle - and works with other receptacles - then that site is wired incorrectly and there is no way to get around the problem other than moving to another site. Page 10 of the guide is a troubleshooting information relevant to E0 errors.
  • The response of this EMS to many conditions includes waiting for a time delay - patience and observation of the time delay indicator is required in troubleshooting.

Does that make anything more clear?

Thank you all! Yes, this makes everything very clear! The electrical system in the Escape is a new experience for me and I'm on the learning curve. The receptacle has been corrected and we are happy campers. I will make a note of this and in the future move forward with confidence and vigor.

Brian: I believe you meant E1 in this paragraph...

Good catch! Thanks

Yes, E0 is the normal operating condition; I intended to refer to E1, the reversed input ("polarity") error.

Corrected version:
