Converting to Detachable Power Cord

We have a 2006 17B.

We want to convert fixed power cord to a detachable plug in system.

Any suggestions on conversion kit options. In particular is there a adaptor which replaces the existing door with a minimum of customization?

Does anyone have any experience with the "Smart Plug" product? It uses lock in clips rather than a twist lock mechanism - which might make for a more secure connection.

Unfortunately the Furrion is difficult to buy here in Canada...Amazon.ca wants $260 for it! If you order from Amazon.com it is about $100 USD with shipping and duty. Furrion FCKIT30-PS White 30 Amp Conversion Kit with LED Inlet

Further down in that thread someone suggested ordering it from ETI. I sent them a message and their response was that the removable cord assembly is $150 and they charge $45 to install it. You also get a new cord and get to keep you old cord.

I think you can order the assembly from ETI and do the install yourself. This would probably be a better deal because you also get a new cord!

Go to stevestonmarine.com, you'll find a good selection of 30 amp shore power stuff there, including Furrion for a lot less. Even available in s/s.

That's where I bought my connectors when I converted my Scamp and also made a 30-15 amp adaptor cable.

I browsed the entire Furrion product line on stevestonmarine.com, but I didn't find the conversion kit. All the parts of the kit are sold there, but individually. Adding it all up, the cost is pretty high to get all the components included in the conversion kit. A better option would probably be Amazon.com, even with the duty and shipping charges.

The $26 plug (F30MLPSY) is male - it needs to be female to convert the inlet and cord, and the female is a few dollars more. The weather cover and ring are not part of the NEMA standard connector, and are sold as an add-on to Furrion (and some other) female cord ends.

The kit listed by Furrion looks like a better deal (although I don't see an intemized list of components)... if you are buying in the U.S.

The kit includes a 30 amp female plug, which is $38.99 at Steveston Marine - not $26. That's the plug that works with the male receptacle. Also, the receptacle is square, but the mouse hole is round, and rather large. You'd need the white powder coated steel adapter plate that mounts to the backside of the receptacle. The adapter plate uses the same 3 holes as the original mousehole cover did. They don't list that part at Steveston Marine. Lastly, the plug needs a cover, in order to lock into the receptacle with its threaded ring. Steveston Marine lists that part at $21.99. There are also gaskets included with the kit, which are not sold separately.

You can see the plug cover and ring, as well as the adapter plate, in this photo I took post install. There's also a watertight gasket behind the plate -- no caulking like with the mouse hole.

Forgot to mention, the kit also comes with a junction box (metal) and an adapter ring, in case you want to terminate the power cable on the inside to the box. I didn't go that way, but the parts are in the kit. There are instructions for both methods of installation.

It looks like Furrion is the best way to go.

I still have the problem of how to adapt the existing cord opening to the Furrion template. My trailer is older so it has a locked door opening (square and lockable) which is the same size and configuration as the water intake. The Furrion template is round. Is there any kind of adapter plate that anyone knows of?

Thanks again. Everyone is so generous in sharing their knowledge and experience It is all very encouraging for me to assist in navigating some small but possibly tricky (for me that is) modifications.

Andrew, I'd probably use a piece of Aluminum or Steel and custom cut it to create a mounting plate. If you use Aluminum it will be a bit easier to paint, since you won't have to worry about rust inhibiting primer as with the steel. You could probably also use a piece of PVC sheet, at least a 16th of an inch thick, painted with Krylon Fusion. Attaching it to the Furrion plug assembly is just a matter of a few machine screws. I would make the plate so that the holes line up with your existing cover. Shouldn't be too difficult.
