Do You Really Need To Use 1 Ply T.P.?

Hello,

Not to start any No. 1 vice No. 2 humor, I do have a question.
Is is really necessary to use 1 ply toilet paper when camping as opposed to 2 Ply? I've been told that it better for the black tanks. I would think that if 1 ply was what was used, you would just use more of it, therefore defeating the purpose. Comments?

2 ply works great, I don't think it matters how much it breaks down when you flush it out the hose....

RV supply stores, Wally World, etc., sell TP specifically made for RV black tanks -- it's supposed to break down quick and easy. I've seen in a nephew's trailer the clogging that can happen if you use regular TP and don't use black tank treatment. It was ugly unclogging the mess (No, I didn't volunteer to help... just "supervise" form a safe distance). :P

Any toilet paper that is labelled "safe for septic systems" should be acceptable. I use the Kirkland stuff from Costco.
If you want to test a toilet paper, fill a jar 3/4 full of water, drop in a couple of squares, put the lid on, and give it a few shakes. If all you see is cloudy water, it is good to use. If you can see anything that looks like toilet paper, it may not be the best choice.

OK. Nothing turned up when I tried it.

I can advise that the crap they sell at Canadian Tire as RV TP shreds in your hand before it even gets damp. I've been buying Thetford brand ( the people who make the toilet ) and I'm happy with the quality. Found at RV shops or I guess you could get it on-line.

My other advice? Before using the toilet, ensure that there is an inch or two of water in the bottom. Then lay strips of TP on the bottom of the bowl. I'm not going to delve into the details, but it can save you effort after.

Our choice is to use the toilet for liquid waste only. Gotta a solid problem...take a hike to the nearest toilet. In this fashion, Deb is the only one who uses paper and we keep a ziploc baggie near the toilet for her discards (we pitch it every day). Deb can use the cushiest quilted 46-ply stuff she wishes.

I thought the point to having an RV with a bathroom was to use the bathroom.

All this talk of "to wipe or not to wipe" is a bit anal at best.

My advice:

1) use your bathroom and use it well,

2) use quality RV TP and chemical

3) if in doubt, make or purchase the cleaning wand.

With that said, it is only by coincidence that we have not used our bathroom for a movement in B major. Our timing has been good.

I prefer to use the site facilities if available. We tend to use the toilet for nighttime and when there are no outhouse/toilets nearby.

Same for showering, we use the camp showers if available.

Both are great to have when you really need them though.

Oh, and we use single ply stuff that breaks down easy. In our last trailer we used 2 ply a bunch on one outing, and the sewer piping got a bit plugged, not a fun time let me tell you.
