If you do that after a bit the awning will retract.
If you want to disable the feature just turn the awning off at the switch by the door.
But I'm not sure why you would want to do that. I would rather it go into retract if the wind is shaking the awning enough to set off the sensor.
Edit,at least that's what the manual says.
I have not tested it, but it says when the batteries are dead it will retract.
