dometic door hinge resolve

A few years ago, while traveling with my 2006 17B Escape, I encountered some waffled blacktop. When I stopped, the fridge contents were on the floor and the top plastic corner where the hinge pin goes was cracked. Ever since, the door has sagged and given me problems. It finally occurred to me to reverse the door. I found new hinges on eBay for $15 and it works now like new. I have the new hinges for the right side of the door if anyone can use. I’ve heard others mention similiar problems with doors cracking. Leave me a message and I will mail to you. It was very simple to reverse door.

Your next step is to fashion a strap to hold the door closed while traveling. So long as the door is firmly seated into the box, it can't move. What I did is as follows using hardware store components:

1. attach a strap loop/bracket on the box frame on each side about mid-door. These loops are shaped like a drawer pull or gate handle with the loop part a little larger than 1". I drilled into the metal frame and pop-riveted the brackets into the frame.

2. attach 1" nylon straps to the loops, one on each side. Use a composite plastic buckle in the middle. The buckle is the type you find on backpacks. I used an already fabricated strap set that is used to cinch up sleeping bags.

When you get ready to roll, attach the buckles together and snug up the straps. Things may rattle around inside but nothing is getting out...

I'm vague on the parts because there are all kinds of parts. Just poke around at your local hardware store for brackets etc. REI or similar sporting goods stores have a large variety of straps and buckles. Don't use velcro straps. They will pull loose in a rough ride like my first design did...

You can also use 2 Command hooks on the hing side spread apart 8-10" then a single one on the other side then use a 1 x 12" cargo strap.

I ordered the thin plate from little house customs, it was too wide for the door. It’s a small fridge. I have been using child safety locks on the fridge and few other cabinets, they work well and are simple to open and close.
