Dometic RMD 8555 runs cooler now
I want to share something that REALLY helped our fridge. We tried several of the helpful ideas posted-but fridge still got too warm on ride home and in mid day when just parked. We had read about putting some insulation in fridge door so Kip did that and also on the three walls of fridge, but not the bottom tray. Used INSUL foam 1/2" from Home Depot, left the shiny side showing. So far has stayed in the mid 30's instead of the mid 40's. All the other things we learned from this site, combined with the extra insulation probably all worked together.
We live in the Phoenix area, it is at least a two hour (or more) ride up through the mountains to get anywhere cooler. We are now able to leave the food in the fridge for the ride up and back, so much easier!

Did you have to take anything apart to get the insulation in?

Are you installing the rigid foam inside the unit?

I can't find any product called "INSUL" either on google or on the Home Depot website.

I did the same with mine earlier this week but I used 1" foam. The frig. cools down in 6 hours instead if 18 hours. It actually ran 1-2 deg. cooler going down the road than in my barn. I had also added a door strap among a bunch of other stuff but the foam was the first thing I did that held the temperature going down the road. This was in 90 deg. weather and a two hour road trip.
Eddie
I kept all my big shelves and drawer but lost the door shelves.

You're making me feel old! I don't have a smart phone either, but I can still take digital photos with what I guess is now considered an "old fashioned" digital camera - a Sony Cyber-Shot. Do they even make such old fashioned things anymore?

I have a flip top phone, my camera used film, it too much of a hassle to do that anymore. Thank goodness for grandkids, they all have smart phones and just send me their pictures.

Forgive me, thought I put this info in and then it disappeared. Foam had R-TECH and then Insul Foam by a Carlise Company. Bought at Home Depot.

Ok, thanks for clarifying. Here is the product link, I think.
http://www.homedepot.com/p/R-Tech-1-...0810/202533656
Its EPS foam, but I would imagine a polyisocyanurate foam or an extruded polystyrene would be suitable as well. When you say it was installed with the "shiny side showing", I'm assuming you mean the foil clad side.

Interesting. Odd that Dometic wouldn't build in enough insulation at the bottom of the fridge (if I interpret this right.) I'm headed for the high desert in Oregon for the Eclipse in August, so gotta give this a try - even have left over insulation from other projects.

I read it as they put insulation on the door, the sides and the back, but not the bottom (or the top either apparently since it wasn't mentioned), so it wasn't a lack of insulation on the bottom that caused a cooling problem:

I used 1" pink foam. I trimmed an opening for the latch and light and with 1" foam you may have to trim to fit by your fins. I have to go out this morning so can't reply until later. The concept of the 8XXX was a lightweight frig., it is also a narrow series model they cut back on the foam for a larger capacity frig. is my guess. I had no real issues with the freezer. You can see the freezer has much thicker insulation than the frig.

I take it then Eddie that you nixed the door shelves and dont store items in the door anymore?

Seems that would be kind of like an auto manufacturer deciding to eliminate the driver's seat to increase cargo capacity.
