e21 big fridge-freezer, the freezer door is stuck

the latch on our freezer door seems stuck, I can only get the freezer open with quite a bit of wiggling and forcing, its like when I push up on the release, the locking tab isn't lifting high enough.

are there replaceable parts inside the door?

I found on our freezer that the latch behaves as you describe when ice builds up inside the door around the mechanism. When I defrost the freezer and leave the door open long enough, water drips out of the freezer door latch area. When the ice is gone, the latch works freely again.
