Furnace

Just back from sunny Merritt, B.C. where an icy wind forced us to take refuge in the trailer and overnight lows of 9C. meant employing the furnace. Last time we were up there we had a problem with the furnace, which was fixed under warranty ( some mysterious part would expand a crack when heated and stop the fan ). This time, after the flame is out and the fan is still running, it emits a barely audible high pitch noise, and then as the fan comes to a stop, sounds like a chirping baby bird.

All I know is that's probably not good.

I combed the instruction manual that comes with the furnace and only learned "DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING, UNDER PENALTY OF DEATH". Only a certified gas-fitter can even open the grill to look for hatching nestlings. The motor ( my prime suspect ) is "permanently lubricated and sealed". Apparently permanent is just past the warranty.

So, it's down to the RV centre for a fix, before failure. I'm not expecting a do-it-yourself solution, but information that would prevent me from spending more than I need to would be helpful.

And then, I'm off to the Glass Express centre to have the windshield on the RAV replaced...

Re: Furnace

Windshield will cost me the $200 deductible. No idea on the furnace yet.
Retirement is looming and so is my dentist, so I don't need the reminders that "stuff" happens.

Oh well.

Re: Furnace

Hi: gbaglo...Let me get this straight. You got a broken pane, birds in your furnace, and your Dentist is "down in the mouth" You might have to get a job to pay for all this stuff and you're not even retired yet!!! Alf

Re: Furnace

I don't need no "stink'n" teeth.

Anyway. Here's the Kane Lakes campsite ( Harmon Lake East ). Nobody around for some 300 feet in any direction. Two other campsites occupied. It's up to you to find Toad.

Re: Furnace

That's camping!!!! Sorry about the "boo boo's". Hope it's not a big deal to fix the heater, and your dentist says "no cavities"!

Re: Furnace

That is a beautiful photo of a fabulous looking campsite. Just the kind we like. Hope you get the furnace fixed without too much hassle. We always have our little Coleman Sportcat heater with us because we don't like the way the furnace works by cycling on and off and it is noisy even without the high pitched noise you were hearing. The Sportcat is silent and takes the chill off nicely. Click on this... Coleman SportCat PerfecTemp Catalytic Heater
Thanks for sharing that wonderful photo. Jenny

I agree that that camp photo is the ultimate for my family; no crowds, on a spit of land over the water. Perfect...

Doesn't that Sportcat require some ventilation for safety? How do you handle that?

Yes it does require some ventilation. We open the roof vent about 1/2 inch. It works beautifully.
Sorry that last link didn't work. Here is the Amazon link... http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-SportC...4409998&sr=8-2

We've used this type:

for several years and are quite pleased with it.

Re: Furnace

But, I digress. Jeepers, I'm one of the worst at hijacking topics.

Anyway, it appears the "permanently lubricated and sealed" motor needs replacement, just 6 weeks out of warranty.
Estimate is $90 for the motor and $130 for remove and replace.

Should be ready to pick up tomorrow. RV centre promised to plug in the fridge so I'll be able to cry in cold beer.

Meantime, I sent an email to Attwood Mobile Products expressing my dismay, since this is the second problem with their furnace. Other was fixed under warranty shortly after I got the trailer.

And the RAV gets a new windshield tomorrow for the $200 deductible.
