furnace ping

Hi,new to the forum and have read through a lot of it and have found many helpful posts so far ,but nothing on this particular problem that I am having. Now that it is getting colder I've used the heater in my 15'.It makes a strange noise like expanding metal cracking or a ping,or bang, but really load and impossible to sleep through.Anyone else experience this? And is there something to do about it?

Re: furnace ping

Yep sounds familiar when we start ours for the first time in the evening it makes a few crackle pops it's just the metal expanding ours quietens down after a few cycles or we just don't pay any mind to it. What is loud though is the thermostat, when it shuts down after the trailer warm up is disturbing. It makes this loud PING ! I tell you the first time it shut off I thought it blew up or something. I guess that is the way it works or I hope that is the way it is supposed to work.?

In my 2010 19ft the furnace made the same noises but got the more it ran the less noise it made. You could use an electric heater and save the propane.

Re: furnace ping

I've found the solution to sleeping through the thermostat clicking on and the furnace and fan starting up is a small, silent, oil-filled heater when AC power is available. When it isn't, lots of covers on the bed. And the thermostat turned way down or off.
Any sound in a small space is amplified.

If you hear a chirping noise from the furnace fan, like when it is shutting down, and if the furnace is still under the two year warranty, take it in to a warranty service depot ( most RV places ). It is the "life-time, sealed, lubricated" bearing that is dying. Cost me nothing, but would have cost $209 to have the motor replaced if it hadn't been under warranty. Apparently, the furnace manufacturer will not replace the motor under warranty for a second time. ( I thought I detected a squeak in my new motor, 23 months after it was replaced - I inquired ).

Apparently, it's not my life-time they refer to when describing the sealed bearing.

Re: furnace ping

Thanks for the reminder about the 110v heater Chuck, I took it out for the summer. But now where heading up Kamloops way we may need it with temps going down to 10c at night. And if there is no tree to plug into my guess is the snap crackle pops and clicks will commence.

Re: furnace ping

It is funny hearing what sort of things bother others. I find the sound of the furnace coming on kind of pleasant. Sort of like yeah going to be toasty in here tonight. But outside light bugs the crap out of me. We rarely hear the furnace unless we are just going to sleep.

Re: furnace ping

Sounds like you have to just put up with it.I previously had a 2007 tent trailer, with a heater.Never heard this kind of noise from it ,although the fan made a lot more noise than this one does.i mostly go were there is no hookups so an electric heater won't help me to much.Although is a good idea if there is hookup.
