Help needed with inverter

I bought a 400W inverter from Cdn Tire and plugged it into the cigarette lighter in my Escape 17B. It was not able to run my laptop...........Toshiba 15 saying it was underpowered.
Can anyone tell me what's going on here? Is there not enough juice coming from the cigarette lighter or what?
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Re: Help needed with inverter

Makes no sense to me. I ran a 100W inverter in the company Dodge Neon to power a 17" MacBook Pro, and had the cell charger plugged in at the same time.

Re: Help needed with inverter

I also have the 400 w inverter from Can Tire.I installed a cigaret lighter plug in my Escape 15, wired to the electrical box.I have dual 6 volt batteries. Before heading out, I had the trailer plugged into 110 house. Then drove with everything off, fridge running on propane, drove for about 1 hour.Evening time ,I hooked up my 18' flat screen, which draws 45 watts. It only runs for 1 hour through the inverter, with nothing else except the DVD player that came installed from Escape. Then after 1 hour the inverter starts beeping, like the batteries are low.The batteries still ran my furnace and pump and lights for 4 more days after that.So my question is ,does anyone else run a tv off the 12 volt system and how long does it last for you?

Re: Help needed with inverter

Try to find the 12v adapter for your tv and eliminate the inverter need.

Re: Help needed with inverter

The Canadian Tire inverters are finicky about their input voltage (at least, the one I have is). Works fine on a freshly charged battery, but when the battery starts to run down a little, the inverter gives up.

As others have said, best to avoid the inverter if you can run off 12v directly. More efficient, and fewer things that can go wrong.
