Honda 2000

Good morning,
I am having a problem getting my Honda 2000 gen set to supply power to our 2016 21’ Escape. My surge protector monitor has a E 2 error code (open ground) Is it necessary to somehow ground the generator? The trailer when plugged into normal 120 volt shore power works fine. I am tempted to run a ground wire from the generators ground terminal to a grounding stake hammered in the ground. Bad idea?
I actually have 2 Honda 2000s, the companion series, that I could use together if more wattage is necessary. Problem the same... open ground.....
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Another thread, same subject. There are several.

Basically what's happening James is that the EMS is sensing correctly that neutral and ground are not bonded. Most of the 2000W portable inverter/generators are made this way with a "floating neutral", including the Honda. The plug mentioned in the links above simply bonds neutral to ground, so the EMS no longer senses open ground, and operates normally.

What a simple fix!! I’ll make up a plug and give it a shot. I looked for a thread before posting guess my wording was wrong. Anyway thanks for the expertise! What a great source of knowledge.

Here's a decent video describing the issue and the fix. Unfortunately the Progressive Industries GEN-PLUG is no longer available. Easy enough to make one.

Here's a good video on how to make it:
