(Sorry, Pat - I know Fb isn't the object of your question, but the discussion has pulled it in and now I am curious.)
That is what Facebook says will happen, and I have never seen anything that would lead me to believe otherwise. I do some volunteer tech tutoring at the local library so I set up a dummy Facebook account to use for that tutoring. When the dummy isn't my friend, he can only see my profile picture, and send me friend requests

Facebook's privacy settings do help, but they are definitely not a cure all. Common sense should prevail. One rule of thumb I teach both to customers as well as friends and family is this: assume that everything you put on the Internet is accessible to anyone. Safeguards help, but there's no sure fire way to protect it once it's there.

All seriousness aside I do remember Bill Cosby himself, back when his humor was appreciated, saying "I'm so old that when I played basketball, I was a minority."

I may be kidding myself, but I like to think where I live a locked gate means "Stay Out."
Except during Open Range Season and the cows are out I am even hesitant to go inside a closed, unlocked gate unless I know the owner. The Castle Doctrine is alive and well here. The jails are full nationwide. The police balk at putting repeat offenders thru the criminal justice system. Smart crooks should be aware of the consequences of trespass and that some neighborhoods have little tolerance for rampant crime. The Wasp Spray is right inside the door.

For me KarenH is right. Take the necessary precautions then go about living. If something is going to happen, it will. You did what you could.

If you feel you live in a bad place consider the [choose your ethnicity] person who heard on the radio that most accidents occur within 25 miles of home so he moved.

I had to do something, I had to pay the IRS this year. Cost me about 6 nights of camping so not too bad.
