Inverter?

Okay, so should we get the inverter? We rarely camp without shore power, but if we need to spend a day or two without, would we need an inverter? The refrigerator, water heater, and stove will run on propane, and the microwave would drain the batteries anyway if we used it, so that leaves the lights. How long can we go with the Group 29 battery? Do we even need the solar panel for our type of camping?
Thanks.

Ah, maybe this topic should be a stickie

As Karen suggested, you can review previous threads that cover this topic in detail.

The bottom line is; it depends solely on what you want to do.

Small correction to your statement; a microwave will not drain a battery if you use it to heat a couple of bowls of soup. It depends on how you use it. And, normally lights aren't run off the inverter.

... I think the question was drifting from "do I need an inverter" to "if I'm running on battery and not much more than lights are running on the battery, do I need solar?". But that's just my interpretation.

If you are doing an electrical energy budget - how much comes in each day and how much goes out - there are a few more items 9in addition to lights and whatever you run on an inverter) that run on the battery:
  • water pump
  • furnace fan
  • stove hood fan
  • ventilation fans (MaxxFan and bathroom fan)
... but of those only the furnace fan uses a lot of energy, and even that is only a concern if the furnace needs to run a lot.
