Kayak transport with a 5.0

Not an owner yet..getting closer..and am asking 5.0 owners if they have transported 12' kayaks either on the TV (Toyota Tacoma or similar) or top of 5.0 trailer? Thanks for any response.

Re: Kayak transport with a 5.0

Hi Joe,
We transport 2 10ft kayaks on top of our TV (Nissan Frontier). Having another foot on the back side may be really tight on significant turns? Don't know how to access a picture of it on my Mac, so will see if I can get a pic later tonight from my PC.

Re: Kayak transport with a 5.0

Thank you for your reply. I plan to pickup top the kayaks if possible. I have seen some examples posted on this and other sites of kayaks on pickups. A 12' kayak may be 2' or 3' forward of the truck nose. Might be too much. Experiments are in order. I will check legality also.

I thank the posters for the information on Escapes and their travel adventures. Very informative and entertaining at times.

I can't find the link but there is a kayak rack that slides on a rear receiver and they are stored vertical behind a 5th wheeel and motor home. It was expensive but looked handy.

It would be interesting to see such a contraption!

just wondering how far the kayaks can overhang the rear of a pickup pulling a 15' escape, anyone know?

Can't speak to a 15, but I put a pair of 10' kayaks in the back of my 6' box, and have no problems towing a 19. Now the kayaks are nose down and at a bit of an angle, so they don't overhang a full 4' and they are well above the propane tanks. But it works well...

Not a pick up but here is a 16' canoe hanging off the back of a Lexus RX350 and a 15' Escape behind. I guess the canoe overhangs the rear bumper by about 2 or 3 feet?
We do have a Ford Ranger, 6' box, as well but I have not had the trailer behind with the canoe on the truck rack.
I don't think you should have any problem with a 10' kayak.

And just where is Trowbridge?
Can't seem to find it on a map. Just curious

No problem. I carry a 16-foot canoe on my RAV4 with ease. If I were carrying two canoes, I would have to shift them forward to ensure they clear the trailer in a tight turn.

But, back to a 5.0, it would depend on the tow vehicle. If you have a "king cab" or whatever Toyota calls it, you may be able to put 12' kayaks on the roof of the tow vehicle without impinging on the fifth wheel. If not, there are racks available that attach to the front bumper of the tow vehicle so you can mount the boat on the cab and bumper rack.
You don't want to try to haul a canoe or kayak up top of the 5.0 and besides, you're going to leave the 5.0 at camp and still need to get the canoe to the put-in. Boats need to be on the tow vehicle.

no problems with Delta 15.5' kayaks, had to move them about 6" forward leaving about a 2.5' overhang towards the 15A trailer.

I used to carry a 17 ft canoe on top of my camper (with a boat roller installed on the rear end) and became an expert at camping where a tree was always in the way when trying to roll off the canoe....

On the tow would be far easier to load/unload and a LOT closer to the ground.
