Lighting the stove

My wife's arthritis in her hand is giving her problems using virtually any wand lighter to light the trailer's stove. Non childproof lighters are no longer manufactured, and the "safety" top wheels on all lighters are the main source of her problems. Anyone out there come up with an easier way to light the stove?

One can no longer twist off the safety shield from Bic lighters with pliers?? Ok.

Long wood matches? Either 3" or the 8" variety might do too. I am guessing at lengths here.


Edit... If you come to rally next year, I might have a supply for "oldie" Bics.

Here's an untested thought: I bought a click-type ignitor for a grill we had in the back yard that was hard to light with matches in the wind. I picked it up in the BBQ/grill parts section of Home Depot. Perhaps a "Mod" is in order for the stove.

Keep meaning to get a simple spark generator like the Gas Co. uses when they are testing your appliances. The butane lighters are a PITA to get a flame- especially it seems when it is cold in the morning and you need coffee!

As a last resort, you could replace the stove with one that some Escape owners have which does not require the use of a lighter.

I believe the lighters sold at Costco in packs of three are not child-proof.

The answer to some problems really is more power... in this case, battery power:
Camco GM12 Continuous Ignition Multi-Sparker
No butane at all, and no pulling a trigger hard enough to snap a piezo crystal to make a spark.

I have one; it worked pretty well for anything you can get the end right into... until it was left too long with a battery in it and the battery failed and corroded the inside.

And this type would be? Not having to light one sounds ideal to me as my tendonitis might not like lighting it if it requires a lot of pressure. And I'd be traveling w/o many times.

How about installing a piezo push button ignitor? You know, the kind used on propane barbecues. There's quite a number of folks on FiberglassRV that have installed these. You can get everything you need at a big box hardware store.

I have the stainless cooktop and I drilled a hole near each burner to mount the spark electrode. Others have made brackets to hold the electrode. Electronic Stove Ignitor - Fiberglass RV

Dad warned me never to play with matches. But, I still use them.

Get some bamboo skewers and a bic lighter. Use the lighter to light one end of the skewer, stick the skewer in to where the pilot light is, turn on the gas and voila, you have flame. One skewer can be used for lots of lightings.
