Locking Batteries In

Hi folks,
Iím wondering if someone has developed a practical way to lock in the two 6 volt batteries that sit on the rear bumper of the 17B? Or, if itís even a concern? There are lots of stories of battery theft, but usually related to storage or some neighbourhoods. I have looked at some of the Curt lockable boxes and the DIY YouTube videos but none seem adaptable to the Escape. Any advice?

Don

I have asked a friend who is handy with a welder to fabricate a hold down bar from angle iron, approximately 4 ft in length, that can be laid across the top of the batteries and secured to the vertical support holding the spare tire. Still that leaves the possibility of someone removing the spare tire mount, currently bolted to the bumper, to free the batteries.

Open to any clever alternatives.

battery lock

I was afraid someone would be interested in my batteries not knowing they are 6 volt. I ran a bicycle cable that is adjustable around the bumper and tightly over the battery case. Just for honest people that might be lazy.

Sadly, many thieves will take the batteries for just the core refund. A good battery sent to recycle for a measly $20

Here is my fabricated hold-down bar for the rear batteries on the Escape 17. Courtesy of a friend with a welder. Material cost - ten loonie$.

I still need to pre-drill the holes to bolt the bracket to the spare tire mount and lock it in place.

Pic showing the fabricated bar (4 ft long) with welded centre bracket (actually 3/4 inch off centre).

Closeup pic of the welded bracket.

Pic showing the bar resting in place (not yet secured).
