Mattress quality
We will be ordering the 5th wheel this week and wonder how the quality of the factory installed mattress is, or should we provide our own? Any help or direction appreciated.....thanks

I think the factory queen mattress is excellent.

Hi: Michael.Chadwick... We've had our 5.0TA for over 2 yrs. now and still find the ETI supplied queen mattress great. I think it's slightly shaped to fit into the nose of the trailer. The pillow top is a little longer than the bottom. I know that because I tried to turn it around but just put it back the way it was!!! Alf

I find it way too firm. It's a firm mattress laying on plywood. I've just purchased a slatted mattress support from IKEA. I'll be trying that in the trailer and if it doesn't soften up the bed I'll replace the mattress with another softer one I have.
It's an individual thing, if you like really firm you'll be as happy as a clam at high tide.

I have been using a sleep number since 2006. It works very well, but the I need to adjust the number every time there is a change in altitude or temperature.

A slatted mattress support? Who does that? The thing you have to remember about Ron is he's always been a hard-ass.

We decided to try the standard mattress before ordering a custom one.... We haven't felt the need to replace it yet (3 seasons).

We put a memory foam topper on the 2014 Escape mattress and love it.

Same here. We thought we might have to change the factory mattress for something "better", since we are used to our TempurPedic at home. Nope. The stock mattress works just fine so far.

Our mattress at home may be slightly firmer than the one in the trailer but I can't complain about a thing. Have used it about 8 weeks so far. Loren

The mattress in the 5.0 is too firm for me. I put at 2 1/2 inch memory foam topper on and now it's great.

I think the mattress in my 21 sleeps fine, and I've spent 261 nights in it so far. Yeah, I keep track with a spreadsheet...

We already had a memory foam topper and felt that the mattress was still too firm given that it sits directly on plywood.
We bought one of these for another mattress that also sits on a wood base without a box spring. What a difference, love it. So the next project will be buying a similar one for the trailer. One benefit may be that there will be lots of air circulation under the mattress.

I too bought the stock mattress and an upholstered cover option. The mattress turned out just OK but the mattress cover was a disappointment. A $200 option plus the cost of fabric of about the same amount of money. Plus the mattress was too small .... about 3" short of the space it was too fit in top to bottom and a couple inches too narrow. At first I wasn't a happy camper ....
I still haven't fixed the over sized mattress cover ( I had it covered thinking that if I needed extra space for visiting guests to sit - I could roll back my bedding and with extra pillows, I'd have a make shift couch) but it has rather deep wrinkles and folds that I expected to be uncomfortable ... especially with a firm mattress. I got used to it and after getting over my newbie- itis, I realized that the extra sized cover would be just right to fit a 1.5" memory foam topper between the mattress and the cover. Problem solved ... I think after installing the topper that mattress will be just perfect.
Now about the too small mattress. My maiden voyage was stopped by a flu illness after pickup .... I camped in Bellingham, Washington Walmart parking lot for most of a week. Oh boy! That was in mid February and my sheets would freeze to the walls below mattress top surface level. My boat used to do the same thing in the winter. They say necessity is the Mother of invention ..... some people put 'pool noodles' behind their setae seat backs to give them a more comfortable sitting angle. For my mattress, the pool noodles were too big so I tried that black water pipe insulation. Perfect! 2" OD between the front wall and mattress and 1.5" OD at both the head and foot of my bed. Those foam tubes create enough air space between my sheets and outside wall surfaces ... no more frozen sheets.... or at least I don't think so. The acid test will be my forth maiden voyage for a road trip this winter. A report to follow.
I'm a happy camper now on both accounts!
Tom

Before we viewed an Escape, we looked at, and almost bought, an R-Pod. The mattresses of any of the trailers viewed were less than desirable, flimsy and so lightweight you could pick them up easily with one hand. It was obvious that it was lightweight to save on overall trailer weight and reduce costs.
The Escape mattress is heavy and firm and I sleep better than ever. My husband would say the same. Being retired I wish I could sleep past 6am when at home. When 'Escaping' I sometimes sleep until 8:00--a rarity at home. We prefer a firmer mattress and this is perfect for our preferences.
I suggest you try it a few nights and see if you want to change up anything once you sleep on it.
Lorna
