Max fan, rebuild or replace

On our most recent trip, we stopped for the night and when we started to open the max fan, there were some metal pieces on the screen below the blade. They were lightweight metal and had quite a bit of grease on them so I assume it is from the drive assembly that you crank the fan up and down with. Has anyone ever tried to replace that part? If so, how difficult is it? I hate to replace the whole unit. FYI, this is on a 2016 21.

I guess I should also be asking, how hard is it to replace the whole Maxfan?

The manual operator unit is pretty cheap. Even so, since you're barely out of the warranty I would call them for advice/instructions and they just might send you a new operator free.............worth a shot. At least they could email you instructions. https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories...0281K-3CF.html

Thanks for the tip. I ordered the part from etrailer. Way cheaper than replacing the whole unit.

I had to replace the gearbox on my deluxe maxxfan... it wasn't that hard. rather than trying to work on the roof of my 21, I took the whole assembly off and did the repair on the bench.

to get the thing off, I manually lifted the lid, then you remove 2 screws on each side. on the inside, you remove the screen, bezel and then you can unplug the wires. also remove the knob. now you can lift it off the roof. I put a towell down next to it first, so I could put it on the towel so I could situate myself to carry it down off my 8' ladder.

the instructions that come with the replacement gearbox show how to remove it from the fan assembly (they assume you are doing it on the roof of your RV, but are still applicable to doing it on your bench)

The part I replaced is 10-20281K-1AF, I got it from etrailers, for $13.... ooops, looks like its $16 now. https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories...0281K-1AF.html

I did the same rebuild as John last weekend on my truck tailgate. The pot metal gearbox (part 16A or 16M on the diagram) was shattered right where the lift spring attached to the gear box. You'll just need a 3/16 Allen head to take off the fan blade and a Phillips screwdriver driver for everything else.
The only problem with the install was getting it off/on the 5.0 TA roof.
Took the opportunity to clean up the whole thing inside and out.

I did not remove the max fan to replace the part as it seemed to add a lot of work to the project. It took maybe 1/2 hr to do the replacement with the fan still in the roof.
