Proflex I find works good as a replacement for the silicone. Goes on as a liquid but dries real flexible.

Good to know Jim. Anything is better than silicone. Once you use silicone it contaminates the surface and nothing else will stick to it. Not even more silicone. The residue is virtually impossible to remove. Furthermore it does no t adhere to some materials like vinyl as Ron has shown.

By the looks of those screws something was leaking. I have had my vent cap off a couple times and my screws are still shinny and our trailer is older then yours.
Probably something in/on the wood with some added moisture.

I've used silicone for 35 years and have never, ever, had a problem with it. Although, true, silicone is extremely difficult to remove (and by that very quality it makes for an extremely good adherent) it can be removed with the appropriate application.
With the appearance of rust on the screw heads, in Ron's photo, it looks to me as if the silicone, in this case, was applied to a wet surface.
It's my opinion that not much is better than silicone when used or removed properly and on the correct material.

I wonder why the sealant wasn't put on the screws versus just on top, , that would seem to make a better seal. Anytime I installed a new vent I applied butyl tape to screws so that when they were tightened, excess would be expelled. I then applied Proflex to the screw head. Never leaked.
