Moulded Fiberglss Tank Cover

Are there any plans for a moulded fiberglass cover for the propane tanks? Would it even be feasible (cost effective) to even look at doing? Maybe even one that would combine some storage as well. I would love to carry a small gen set outside the tow vehicle and trailer, maybe even one converted to propane. It would give a classier look too.

I do understand this would be a bit costly, but if it was offered as an option, one could weigh it out for themselves without raising the base cost of the unit.

Just throwing out more thoughts.

Re: Moulded Fiberglss Tank Cover

Hi Jim

At this time, the units will be supplied with the standard soft vinyl cover. With so many molds underway and upcoming, there is not the time to work on this area. It is something I am looking into and when they become available, will fit all units.

Re: Moulded Fiberglss Tank Cover

Thanks for the reply Reace, no doubt you and your team are busy building moulds.

I noticed the dual tanks sit front to back. Is it feasible to mount them side by side? My thought is to make room to put some kind of small storage box on the tongue, a place to put something like the 2,000 watt Honda gen set.

My other thought was to have the receiver on the back installed and putting a small storage box there. I do know well that I have to watch the tongue weight though.

Re: Moulded Fiberglss Tank Cover

Hi Jim

The reason the tanks are positioned front to back on the 17' is to eliminate extra hitch weight. With a dry weight of 250 lbs, add 80 lbs for 2 full propane tanks and 2 6V batteries (typical add on)....hitch weight is now 430 lbs. Average weight added to the hitch with interior goods is 200 lbs putting it at 630 lbs. The hitch has a max rating of 700 lbs. Cuts it close and I like to play it safe!

The 19' may have a different set-up.....I will know soon enough.

Thanks for the info Reace, looking forward to hearing what the final setup on the 19 will be.

Re: Moulded Fiberglss Tank Cover

Reace,

Is there some sort of formula I could understand and apply to weight distribution, or is it all trial and error? For instance, I was looking at a cargo platform from etrailer that goes into the hitch receiver at the back. Assuming I put the Q and 10 lb. tank and a couple chairs on it, weighing about 100 lbs., what would I do to compensate at the hitch? Could I get away with moving canned goods to the front of the trailer?

Last time I tried to use a bathroom scale to get my hitch weight, I destroyed it. If I did it again, I'd put a chunk of plywood between the trailer wheel and the scale.

Currently, I'm carrying all that weight anyway, with the chairs on the bed and the Q and tank and accessories near the axle.

And six cases of beer under the bed at the back......

Re: Moulded Fiberglss Tank Cover

I elected to go with only 1 propane tank so I would have more room on the tongue area. I had Reace weld heavy steel mesh to the bottom of the tongue and then built my own tongue box, plywood sides with an aluminum diamond plate locking cover. This makes a great catch-all for items that I don't care if they get a little dusty, like blocks, chocks, etc. It really came out looking nice and adds some streamlining to the front of the trailer.

I added mesh to the rear also but have yet to build a box. I had the frame extended 8" so there is sufficient room between the bumper and trailer back for this storage and to better protect the trailer rear.

I will add some photos sometime when I figure out how to do it.
