Mud Dauber screens for my fridge vent?
Hi all,
My 19' escape has the 5-7 cubic foot fridge that is standard in the 21. I have been to a local rv parts place and camping world looking for mud dober screens, but cannot find any for this model / cover... Any ideas? Or create my own......

I was looking for something last year while staying in Florida. Went to camping world, the guy there said they really didn't have anything for the fridge. He said he uses (as wee as others) - goes to Walmart and buys a cheap pet flea colar puts it inside the compartment- said they won't go in because of the smell.that' s what we did and had no problems with them.

Given others who have installed fans to get more air moving, I would think any additional screen would be a bad idea.

A problem in the southern US, where people also have a problem with getting their fridges to work efficiently in the high temperatures.

I have not had any luck either, will probably end up make homemade from scrap screen material.
I recently bought 2 of these (expensive, ouch) Amazon.com: Camco 42149 Flying Insect Screen - RS 600 - 3 Pack: Automotive
with the intent of cutting them down, but they are so well made, my wire cutters will not work!!
Also having trouble with the furnace vent, at least got the water heater covered!! On edit, those mentioned in the above post #7 are the same I got from Amazon, too large.

All I did was bought a roll of screen at Home Depot, cut it to size, and hot-glued it on. I did the same for the vent above as well. Worked very well, and with the extra screen, I shored up the battery vent and the hot-water heater too.

It's us against bugs in the southern US states. Never getting cold long enough, they multiply and will invade and nest in various vents and holes in your RV. For those that are unfamiliar with mud dobers, they are a wasp looking insect that carry bits of mud for nest building. If parked long enough they can damage or effect the operating components of your RV and are a must.
Installing 1/8th mesh screens over the furnace, refrigerator, w. heater vents will not effect air circulation or efficiency.

I put those on our Casita, but only the bottom vents. I did have to cut them to fit. I used tin snips left over from my sheet metal days. Have not done anything on the Escape yet, but plan to.
I wanted to put a cover over the LP furnace outlet. The spare I had from the double outlet style (Casita again) did not seem to fit. What is anyone using there?

Hi: DeadEyeDan... I found some sheet metal round eave vents at our local building supply store, that fit in the exhaust vent nice and snug!!! Alf

My mud dauber screens. I used very light 1/8th screen glued and wired on the refrigerator vent & hot water heater door. Furnace screen was purchased from an online RV parts store.

I still wonder if these screens contribute to the problem of the fridge not cooling enough, so that the Texas Fan needs to be installed. Any correlation in your experience?

Glen...during some of the times when I was trying to get and keep my refrigerator cool, I had the screened vent door completely off with no or very little improvement in performance. This was with the "Texas Fan" running. From that experience, my conclusion was that the screen I installed had no ill effect on the problem of the my refrigerator not cooling. Conditions as I remember: Central Oklahoma, shaded camp area, ambient temp 96/85 F

Dave,
I have the same furnace vent as you, but it appears that you've added something extra at the rolled metal edge that mates with the side of the trailer.
I was thinking of doing similar because im worried about the thing moving about as we travel and scratching the gel coat. What did you use? Weatherstripping of some sort?

Hi Nathan,
I carefully ran a strip of 3M rubber tape around the contact edge. And then trimmed it up to improve the appearance. This tape is normally used for insulating electric motor leads and can be purchased at big box or electrical supply stores. I too was concerned with the furnace vent screen rubbing fiberglass due to road vibration.

Hi David,
How do you get the furnace screen to stay put? By some adhesive tape? I thought they may just snap on, but the screen appears to be a bit larger than the vent. (At least to my eyes.)

It looks like the screen is held on by two springs connected between it and the furnace grid. You can see them if you expand the photo to max.
