New electric awning remote
I had to replace the awning remote. Seems they don’t like to be dropped in the dog’s water bowl. Ordered new one from panther rv for $129 + shipping. The cost of being clumsy. Sent with very good instructions but didn’t even need to go thru all the steps indicated once the dometic awning “recognized” the remote. Glad to have my awning operational again.

I always thought placing the item in a bag of rice could help....expensive mistake.

New electric awning remote
I wonder if there’s a way to waterproof the remote. What if it were disassembled and the innards sprayed or painted with conformal coating? Seal the outside seams with silicone? Might make battery changes tricky. Weird that the company doesn’t ruggedize these a bit more, as they’re made for an out of doors use device. Thoughts?

Julie,
Can you provide the model number that you ordered? Ours has gone out. I should conformal cost the new one.
Thanks

On our 2013 Escape, when my wife wants to use the remote to adjust our awning, she sends me outside to make the adjustment manually.

Put the remote in a plastic baggie and zip it shut. It will work just fine through the thin plastic.

It would not be elegant but fairly easy to put the remote in a snack size ziplock bag.
ahhh see that i forgot to click "post". great minds, etc.
Does it have a battery?

My previous post should have read “conformal coat”, not “conformal cost”.
By the time I saw the error, I could no longer edit the post.
In any case, this is what my current remote looks like. It no longer works so I am in the process of finding a replacement.

I believe so. I discussed it with Tom (tdf-texas) and it looks that way. Bottom line...I put new batteries in it and the LED lights up and stays on, but does not sync up with the awning. The LED should not stay on continuously. Eventually, it will only drain my fresh batteries.
That’s why I was thinking of conformal coating the new one.
Wah!!!

It appears to me your batteries are not inserted correctly. I always thought the spring went on the negative side, yours do not and that corrosion could be from leaking batteries, perhaps from not being properly inserted?

Usually the flat negative side is against a spring but not always. It depends on the design. Based on the + and - markings on the end of the case Fred has the batteries in correctly.

Fred did not confirm, but I believe the corroded unit he shows is his external wind sensor.

Ahhh Scott! You are correct! Julie was referencing the remote control and I mistakenly started posting about my wind sensor unit. Silly me... Good catch!

Dave and Jim,
I also did a double take when I was switching the batteries because I have usually put the negative side against the spring. But, not the case on the wind sensor.
I should start a separate thread because Julie is talking about her awning remote and I am discussing the wind sensor.

That almost looks like battery corrosion happening at the terminals....so the 1.5 batteries are in series to make 6 volts?

There certainly does appear to be corrosion at the terminals. Part of the problem might be that odd use of the springs - the contact on the negative end would probably be better with that cell's spring on the other end, but this was the cheapest way to build the device.

Individual cells (of this size or any other) are almost always used in series - that's one way to figure out the arrangement when markings are not entirely clear (although the markings are clear in this case and the cells were inserted in the correct orientation): they will string together positive to negative. They are nominally 1.5 volts each (if alkaline, not NiCd or NiMH or lithium), so two of them together form a roughly 3 volt battery set.
