(Not) for the birds

Hi all,

We are patiently waiting to get a small pole barn built for our new Escape. In the meantime, she's sitting in our yard, and apparently she is downright magnetic when it comes to grackles, as they have made a big, messy nest in our A/C. Poor Dan is out there cleaning it out right now (if you listen hard you can hear the Dustbuster). Curious -- are there any tricks that might discourage this in the period until we get proper cover? The Mr. and Mrs. are waiting for him to finish so they can move back in.

Re: (Not) for the birds

Any type of cover would stop them, even an old sheet to cover the just the AC.

Re: (Not) for the birds

My brother-in-law sold campers and travel trailers for a living. He always cautioned using covers on trailers. There were two points he made: the trailer needs to breathe, so venting of some sort and tarps or covers can flap in the wind and cause more damage than they prevent.

Paul, most of the covers now are made of breathable fabrics, and often have cinch straps to pull them tight to the trailer. Something non-breathable would be asking for mold to grow.

Re: (Not) for the birds

I was actually envisioning a cover over just the AC...until the pole barn was complete.

Re: (Not) for the birds

Jim, that is good to know about todays trailer covers. I was most worried about seeking a temporary solution that used a 16 x 20 tarp with bungee cords from Farm and Fleet to cover the AC unit and a protion of the trailer.

Yeah, that would not be such a good idea.

When I had a pigeon problem at my home, I put one of those frogs that croak if you cross in front of it in the area where they tried to roost. It worked!

It is nice of you to build a pole barn for the birds to nest in, and the batds as well, can't forget the bats.

Hi: medora... I had a problem with robins. Mrs. R kept building a nest and I kept taking it down. Finally in a desperate attempt the nest ended upside down. Seems Mrs. R couldn't understand that concept and stopped trying to build again. Alf
