Nuts & Bolts (literally)
Does Escape use SAE or Metric sizes in their construction? Rookie question but I'm putting a toolkit together for when I pick up my 19 next month.

Other than the lug nuts, I have yet to come across a nut to be tightened on my Escape. I carry an adjustable wrench, and sockets for the lug nuts is all.

I asked Reese that question when I picked up the trailer and he said English. But as Jim said, there are few nuts and bolts, mainly screws and the ones Escape uses are square drive. I have used an adjustable wrench a few times on the water and gas fittings while doing some mods to the trailer.

Make sure to get a multi-bit screwdriver that includes #1 and #2 box ends. That's all you'll see inside.

The original name for what you call a box end or square drive screw is the Robertson - another great Canadian invention. If I could only use one screw type it would be a Robertson for many reasons.

The things one learns on this forum!! I'm betting my contractor friends know the formal name, but that it's a Canadian invention, possibly not so much. Useful information for winning bets around the campfire during hunting season...

and, the reason the Robertson hasn't invaded the U.S. ?
The Phillips was invented for the auto industry, so that inept plant workers could attach car parts without wrecking them, since the Phillips screw released from the driver before damage could be done.

Even more grist for the campfire mill! Does the Canadian auto industry use the Robertson or the Phillips? I can't imagine the auto makers using one in one country and another in the other, but stranger things have happened.

The Robertson head invaded Oswego, NY many years ago. We had a Canadian tour group bring a production through out theatre, and, at first cursed the "funny" heads that nothing fit. Then, after noticing that you could start a screw at arms length, that even novices weren't stripping out the heads or bits anywhere near as much with phillips, etc we switched over to them. At first we had to order them from Canada, then talked our US supplier into stocking them until they became universally available. It may or may not be the best Canadian invention, (I think that is the Escape) but it ranks up at the top!

The auto industry uses a lot of torx screws these days, like the robertson they stay on the bit and drive nicely. I believe they were invented in the USA....

Car companies are still in love with Philips no matter which side of the border they are made

So our trailer is three hours north of here and I forgot to put in a wrench for the wheel/lug nuts. What size are they? I also forgot the jack so I guess it might not matter anyway.

Off the top of my head, I believe they are 15/16". Often you can use your car jack, just be sure to not put in directly under the axle.
Four years now, and no flat for me. I sure wish I could say that for my construction dump trailer, that seems to pick up every nail on the site, or at the dump.

Thanks guys. Jim many years ago I remember my sister laughing at someone changing a wheel in a downpour. My Father was furious with her. We went about 1/2 a mile and then sat watching father cursing and swearing as he got soaked changing a front wheel! Moral, "never say never"
