$2800 for a $100 oil pan? Sounds more like a Land Rover then a JEEP.

I scour Yelp, pick the service center with the largest number of excellent reviews, and cross my fingers.

I too am going to need to take my truck in for service during this next big trip. Someplace between Portland, Maine and Sioux Falls, SD. I'm glad I purchased the Ford Premium Service Plan. Not much worse than finding there's a pretty good expense, like brakes needed, when you're on vacation!

When traveling I use Jiffy Lube; I have done so all over the country and have had no problems. I use synthetic oil in my Tacoma but even so the manufacturer requires that I change the oil every 5,000 miles, so it is almost impossible (for me) to take a trip without needing an oil change at some point along the way.

I go to NAPA and buy a couple of NAPA Gold oil filters to fit my 2002 Tundra. Then I go over to Walmart and buy my Mobil 1 10-30 for about $24 for a 5 quart "jug" and have 2 of them that I carry around in the truck.

I like to use an independent local shop if I don't want to do the change myself. I also have them check over the brakes, other fluids, and anything else while they are doing it. Cheap money well spent.

Yep, for a diesel it's normal for the oil to turn black almost immediately. The higher compression means more soot blowby. $200 for an oil change seems a bit steep, though.

my '02 F250 uses almost 4 gallons of 15w40 diesel semi-synth for a change. i'm gonna change it myself tomorrow should cost, um, $12 for the motorcraft filter, and ~$30 for the oil (4 gallons of Chevron Delo400 15W40 at Costco...)
