Patching Oak paneling

Has anyone ever patched a hole in the Oak paneling? We had a shelf extension installed by the factory on the fridge wall that we would like to raise up. I can use the existing upper holes for the new lower holes when I move it but that will leave 2 holes on the lower part of the wall that will need patched.

Any ideas on what would be best to use?

Short screws with button heads similar to those used elsewhere in your trailer will at the very least hide the holes.

I find if you carefully remove the screws there may be enough wood fibers exposed to gently slide in the holes with a flat blade, you go around the hole pushing gently in the hole. I then turn the screwdriver over and push the handle over the hole to flatten it out and it will seem to disappear. A dab of brown magic marker also may help to hide the hole.

Careful with the magic marker. I tried a Sharpie that I colour-matched at an art supply store and it was too light or too dark depending on the surface and application. Anyway, I gave up.

One can buy fill for most wood types at most hardware/lumber stores . They are usually marked for a particular wood ,oak is common. However if I were looking I wood match the colour and not worry about which wood they label it for . The natural oak is often a little too pink .

That's been my experience to - the name on the label rarely matches with reality.

I got a set of wax crayons for woodworking. I gave up on those as well because the wax wouldn't stick to the vinyl. Might work for a hole, but didn't work on a blemish.

Fastcap covers work well for this. They come in either a PVC with a natural oak finish. The paneling is not real wood anyway. If you want you can get them in unfinished oak, and then finish as you wish, as well as various sizes. We use them all the time.

Hi Tom. I also have a fridge side fold up shelf that's too low. Question: what are you planning/what did you find out about the wood strips for reinforcement behind that wall. How far up do they go? I'd like to move mine up a good 3" or so.

We made that wall solid on ours so not a problem to move up for us. I ordered and received a package of Fastcaps today that Jim mentioned. I had never known about them before and they are the neatest little things I have seen in a while. I plan on removing the shelf next weekend and seeing what it looks like up higher. The lower holes on ours are down near the mattress so if I decide to raise it the fastcap cover would never be seen by anyone except me.

Well I actually bought 2 and they are a little different shade. Problem is they both came today and I put them both in the same package and now I don't know which is which one to tell you matches the best. I can tell you that one matches real good.

I can just pick them up from a local cabinet hardware supply, the one I linked to. Even if shipped they are not too costly for me, as that is a Canadian company. Alas, you do have to have an account with them, as they do not sell to the general public.

Thanks Tom. Are these different brands, I'm confused as they both say Fastcap and are the same Light Oak? Or maybe the shade varies slightly with print batches?

Both are fastcap and both are light oak but they are different shades. I dont know why but that's why I ordered both.

I called several cabinet shops in our area and no one had them or acted like the even heard of them so that's why I resorted to Amazon. Shipping was high but less then gas and hassle to drive to Nashville or somewhere.
