Not a dumb question at all. I always turn it off until I'm ready to head out again. The night before leaving, I plug the refer in to cool down and turn the propane on in the morning to make certain everything is working before unplugging from my house power. I run the refer on propane while traveling.

I do and don't, but if I've had it shut off, I turn the tanks on and then light the stove top. It can take a while for the propane to reach the burners but when it does, you know you have propane in the lines and can light the fridge.
