propane only working on stove

I just had to refill my propane tank, and now the heater, the water heater, nor the refrigerator will light, though the stove lights. I tried for a half-hour to light the three items on the left-hand side of the trailer, even took out the gas jet on the refrigerator and cleaned it. Nothing doing. Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong?

Did they work just prior to refilling the tank?

I have no idea what happened, but I just went out and re-opened the valve on the propane tank, and everything now is working! WTF!!! No idea why only the stove was working, but now all is working. Sometimes I just don't know what is happening, but since we are leaving for a rally in 2 days, I'm happy.

You may have opened the propane tank valve too quickly the first time, which would activate a safety valve that shut off flow.

Yeah, there are some annoying safety features on the "newer" LP tanks. If you have appliances on before you open the valve on the LP tank, it will sense too much flow and shut it down. That's why you have to turn it off and back on to get it going again. Just make sure everything is off before you open the valve on the tank.

Sometimes I've even had to take the hose off and back onto the tank to get it to reset. They are annoying!

Doesn't explain why the stove still worked.

You'll still get some gas out of the line (at a low presssure) after that safety feature kicks in, so maybe the stove worked, but just a very low flame? OP would have to confirm or not.

Yes we did .Eric and I were checking regulator Pressures at the Mississippi Rally. I got in a hurry and opened the tank valve when the Weber gas valve was open. Had a.bery low
Flame that quickly went out. What could we do? what could we do? Shut everything off.
Take hose loose, drank a beer, discussed Boyle’s Law, valve reset and hooked it all up and slowly opened the tank valve. All worked well. Had a celebratory beer. Then Eric went to jail for trying to sell a grill on Federal Property.

Boyle's Law...seriously? I haven't thought about that in probably fifty years. I am now pretty sure that only gas bags go to these rallies.

Thanks for a good laugh...again.

Deep thoughts or deep something

Hi Karen
Eric is a retired educator and a very deep thinker. You can’t get around him without learning something. It’s gonna be a long winter.

But the volume of gas always increases at the rallies irrespective of pressure (at a constant temperature, of course), so they're breaking all the rules!

I've invited my dentist, and his mini-torque wrench, to the competition.

He's welcome, as long as we all get to practice on your new implants before the contest...

Little wrench

Hi Glenn
That’s smaller than anything I have, hope his eyes are better than mine when it comes to
adjusting the ping point. Thunk. Whoops

I had to get home to dig up a couple cans of dimes because I was a little short to get the good reverend bailed out. I heard Mary busted you out so from there you were on your own.

Excess flow valve

The relevant safety feature is an excess flow valve, and it is located in the fitting at the end of the hose which attaches to the tank, rather than on the tank itself. They way it works is to severely restrict (but not completely block) flow when triggered by an excessively high flow rate. Because it does allow some flow, a stove burner may still be able to operate (it has for me in this situation); however, the furnace and water heater need a substantial propane flow to light successfully, so they will fail to start (and they have for me in this situation).
