Rear brake scraping

At the 7k mark of 9k down forest roads to our campsite we started hearing squealing/scrapping from the rear right brake drum. When we arrived at the site I popped the wheel off and confirmed its scrapping as I spun the wheel but I wasn’t able to figure out how to get the drum off. Any clues on the possible cause? I’m going to try to get a mobile mechanic here tomorrow to look at it but I was hoping it would be something easy I could resolve.

If you can spin the wheel I think it isn't an immediate concern. If the brake drum is too hot to touch after driving down the highway then it is a concern.

On the backside of the wheel hub there should be a rubber plug near the bottom. That is the access for the brake adjustment star wheel. You can insert a screw driver to click the adjustment wheel up or down to loosen the brakes.

If you really need to remove the drum you have to remove the cap at the end of the axle to expose the cutter pin. Remove the pin, unscrew the spindle nut, slide off the outer bearing, and pull off the drum.

But, I think you should try turning the brake adjustment wheel before resorting to removing the drum. Or, do nothing for now until you can feel that the drum is hot.

Depending on the age of the trailer and the backing plate design, there may well be two brake adjusting slots. So only one has a star wheel in there. You’ll find it easily enough. After you remove the hub cap, you might have a castle nut with a cotter key or you might have to pry off the spring clip. Then when you pull out on the drum , the thrust washer and outer bearing may fall out have some newspaper or cardboard on the ground to catch them. Once the drum is off you’ll be able to look the shoes and magnet over.

If you think that sounds complicated read the instructions to replace a Seiki screen cartridge replacement.

It could be something as simple as a small rock that found it's way into the drum. Other possibilities could be a broken spring or a rusty drum rubbing against a backing plate.

What I want to know is why anyone would drive 9,000 miles down a forest road?

Your correct Allen I meant km. Thanks for your help everyone, the brakes were shot everything fell out when the drum was removed. Sheared off the wiring as well. Going to have it and the rest of the brakes checked out tomorrow.

Hope that it's an isolated situation given that your trailer is very new.

Could you post a photo of the situation. If I understand you correctly things like the brake shoes were also loose and detached?

I’m having a hard time visualizing that too. If the wires sheared off at the edge of the backing plate, it should be no problem when installing new ones as the new kit comes
With a fairly long Pigtail that attaches “down the line”. I haven’t seen brakes fall apart like that for a long time. Not saying it
cant happen though. Good thing you heard it.

To remove the brake drum you need to remove the wheel bearings . it's all one piece.

What could have happened is that one of the clips that hold a shoe or magnet came off and churned around inside the drum as the trailer was moving and tore everything apart. Replacing an entire brake assembly with new backing plate is fairly easy. 4 nuts hold the entire assembly to the axle and there are 2 wires to splice. Have you inspected the drum for damage? if the drum is damaged, you'll need a new drum and hub assembly too.

The trailer is currently at a shop as I wanted them to check the other brakes and repair the broken one. I’ll get a photo of the drum etc when I pick it up. The drum was damaged and they suspected it would need replacing. It also looked like part of the brake pad or whatever it’s called was partially melted.

Since this is a 2019, I'm assuming you have contacted Escape? This probably should be a warranty issue.

Just following up, the shop stated the front brakes were improperly adjusted and appear of not been used. The rear brakes were essentially doing all of the stopping power, they also suggested I likely had the Brake Controller too high (6.8). Both rear brakes had virtually no brake pad left. I received the new back brakes and re-adjusted front brake and drove it about 60km today with no issues with the Brake Controller set to 3.

True test will be in 4 weeks when we take it back down logging roads again :-)

I personally chalk it up to learning experience, when the trailer was lurching me back at times I thought it was because it practically weighed the same or slightly more then our Sorento and ignored it. Didn't realize it was actually because it was braking and my car was being dragged back with it.
