Recall #2: Frame repair

Hello All, I have the email about the 2nd recall on the 2009-13 frames.
Escape is sending me the parts and instructions.

I have to have this done locally.

1. Has anyone had it done locally? How much time should I expect the welder to bill for?
2. Any thing you suggest I talk to the welder about before the work is started?

Thank you paul

Welding

I would make sure he knows to use a heat shield when welding around fiberglass. As a certified welder he should know this but none the less I’d ask him discreetly something like Are you going to need a hand setting up the heat shield? I think on the first frame recall a heat shield was referenced, can’t quite remember.

There was not any refrence to using a heat shield when the mending plate was welded to the undersized 3" frame.

Hi Bob
I could not remember if there was reference or not. I know we always used a shield around hydraulics while welding on mowers and the my brother used them as a certified welder working for P&H cranes and John Deere. The guy who welded ours mentioned it as he was setting up the job so I know he used a shield also on recall #1. I don’t weld, always had friends or family who were better at it than I could have ever been. I did work in a grey iron foundry pouring counterweights for Link Belt Speeder in the late 60s. Knocking out those castings and having a small chunk of red hot sand bounce off your knee and go down inside your boot would make you dance for a little bit.

I posted a few pictures of the welding. It doesn't look to me that there would be much heat transfer up to the fibreglass. You may have to copy and paste the link.

It appears that yet another set of angle brackets are to be welded to the origional undersized 3" frame near the fiberglass.

The extra angle bracket (or "L" bracket) for the body is certainly near the fiberglass, but has nothing to do with the frame dimension.

The "frame support bar" is on the bottom of the frame rail, not adjacent to the fiberglass. As already noted, welding that on should put little heat into the body.

The frame dimension is the reason the angle brackets are being added in addition to the frame support bar. The right angle brackets that are being welded on the OE 3" frame contact the fiberglass.
