Replacing the 7 way- help needed

I've replaced a 4-way adapter on a car but no charging wire there. So I'm a little nervous about it since the wire is attached to a live battery. Anything I need to know? All I have to do is remove each wire from the old 7 way and put them in the same place on the new one (which is a Bargman and fits the trailer side).

I have a multimeter like this one but have no idea how to use it.

I know all the wires are good on the existing connector, though, I have a tester for that that just plugs in.

So- anything I need to know?

Yes if your knowledge is as you state....DON'T DO IT YOURSELF...get a local mechanic, rv place or hitch installer to do it right! I am not trying to be mean but realistic with today's computerized cars you can screw something up pretty quickly.

To be clear- I'm not rewiring the car. I'm replacing the very end of the trailer wire connector- which I had professionally installed- with a like piece since the plastic housing is broken on the original.

Unhook everything attached to the battery...or at least pull the fuse on the charging line if you can figure out which one it is. use the DC volts setting on your meter to test the charging line with the red and the black to ground before and after to make sure the line is dead. I once blew a fusable link at the battery and could not use my truck until a replacement was found!

You may have an isolator switch as well that will kill the charging when the vehicle is not running.
