Road Stain

On our last trip of the year, we encountered some seal coating work. The portion of the road we had to travel on recently had an application of what looked like wet dirt. As we drove through, it heavily coated the front and lower portions of the trailer. We managed to wash off most of it at a campground sani dump but couldn't get it all off. We returned home two weeks later and began preparations for winterizing. Despite all of the elbow grease we could muster, we could not remove the brown stain left by the 'mud'. We figure the road crew must have added some sort of stuff to the dirt to keep the dust down. The trailer looks like it has sat out in the hot sun for twenty years. Is there any way to remove this stain?

We have a 19. After I remove road tar using a petroleum-based product I wash the fiberglass with soap and water and then wax the area. -Tom

Magic Eraser is abrasive.

It is, but no more than a wax containing a cleaning compound.

We've already gone over the trailer thoroughly with both rv bug & tar remover and warm water with soap. We had to really scrub the tar areas but this stain didn't budge. It's brown in colour, just like the dirt it came with. Like I said previously, I think the road people put something in the dirt layer to retard dust. This stuff has to be chemical in nature. I need to find a way to remove it.

If all else fails I would try a cleaner which contains oxalic acid. Usually found in boat hull cleaners like Y-10 gel. Barkeepers Friend also contains oxalic acid and oxalic acid powder can be bought off of Amazon.

I had a similar situation. The trailer was parked in my driveway so I have no idea where the stain came from, but I suspect a fertilizer or weed killer.

It was polished out with a restorative polish ( which contains abrasives ).

Before and after.

They put a lot of different compounds in dust control products for road application. These include tracking dyes that allow applicators to know where their product is down as well the products themselves. Perhaps a local DOT office could give you some insights on products that could be used to remove residues. We used to hire an applicator to put down a “cellulose based all natural product”, for dust control. Read that tree sap. Worked well never got a complaint.

I use acetone often for stuff like this. It is fine on the gelcoat, though do not use on all other stuff. Reace was using it while we cleaned off some construction stuff on the exterior of my 19 when I was helping finish it so I could get going.
