Sealant recommendations?

The sealant around my lights is looking ratty. I want to remove it and re-seal it. Does anyone use anything else other than Proflex? I hate the mess it makes while applying it.

I used Sikaflex 221 to seal the long upper lights on Ten Forward (remember ALL those that have those lights... leaked?). It's just as goopy as Proflex. BUT, I used blue painters tape all the way around, a small bead and rubber gloves.

I used this Loctite polyurethane caulk on my boat and it works well. It is also a lot cheaper and available at the big box stores. Make sure it is polyurethane. Also, as Donna says, create an outline with masking tape. Dip your finger in some dish soap and water mixture to wipe down the seam. (The surfactant in soap reduces sticking) Remove the tape immediately.

Sika has great products and many of their Sikaflex sealants would work. The stuff I have mostly used, Sikaflex 1a, cures a bit firmer to the touch than ProFlex, though remains a bit flexible. I have used it in lots of projects for work and at home, but have not used it on a trailer myself. Sikaflex 591 is a marine sealant formulated to work in harsh environments.

I do know what you mean though Fred, as the ProFlex seems to dirty after a while and is quite tough to clean. I would definitely give SikaFlex a try, maybe redo a couple lights and give it some time.

Sikaflex also has a self-leveling sealant that I would bet works at least as good as the Dicor product commonly used with trailers.

This is what Escape sent me to seal around the solar panel mounting bolts modification kit. Self leveling and white and seals good.

That stuff works great, I have used it a lot, but it is also what Fred is wanting to change out to something else.

I have considered the same thing, as I hate when I wash and shine my trailer to have the caulking still look dirty.

I believe the clear is what was used on the lights vs the white which should retain its color?

I used white on a few things I installed, and it is now a dirty grey.
