Shelf above dinette in Escape 19

What do people use the open shelf across the front of the Escape 19 and above the dinette for? Can objects be left there while travelling? Has anyone modified it to improve its utility for their specific needs?

On reviewing posts I see that some folks have had a 12 volt outlet placed nearby so that it can be used for charging phones. But what else is it being used for?

Are there different designs available for the front of the shelf?

Dave

I suspect anything and everything. In our experience an area like the shelf soon ends up with all sorts of items.

Unlike our previous Scamp where everything got tossed around the Escape appears to ride much more smoothly and yes, objects stay on the shelf.

The shelf is also a good place to hide 12v wires from one side of the trailer to another for adding accessory outlets. I'd not leave any breakables there though, they may not be in one piece. I saw one owner attach a web type attachment from side to side to insure items remain.

As said above we used it for lots of things. We had it in our 17 - it's not in our 5TA- we do miss it. We actually asked to have one instead of the enclosed cupboard, but was told structurally we had to have the cupboard. We found it to be open and easily accessable
We kept, our Kleenex box, some small books, paper, pens etc. we never removed them while travelling.

I (like others) ran a strip of LED's along the inside of the lip of the shelf for some indirect lighting. I used a remote dimmer to allow for control from the bed area. Since they're attached to the lip, they don't get in the way of anything we may put up there.

Kleenex boxes (not the small ones) ift perfect up there with the top forward for dispensing. On our maiden run with our trailer to Oregon, a good friend from San Diego gave me a stuffed polar bear which has resided there since too. Otherwise it is often just temporary storage for things we want handy while camped.

Hi: Chapitre... You can make an "Alf Shelf" like this. I did one in our 5.0 and again in the 5.0TA. You must make it just so wide... No "Head Bashed In" possibility!!!
Also add a small Rubbermaid cutlery tray for extra drawer space.Alf

Alf,
I've been trying to find that Rubbermaid drawer divider for ages - can't find it anywhere. Ordering online usually has shipping charges more than the product! Where'd you get yours?

Hi: Zardoz... Isn't Ace...The Place? We got ours at Home Hardware in Canada. There's 2 sizes of Rubbermaid cutlery trays, and it's the small one. At about $5.-$8., it's probably not worth a trip up to get one!!! Alf

Quite a loss. My remote has multiple disco features and speeds. Drives my wife nuts!

So back to the shelf question I was surprised by how much stuff -- books, hats, scarves, -- I could put up there and it stayed put -- I tried to have it not go above the level of the front of the shelf. Don't think I'd put anything breakable just in case.

The inside dimension standard drawers in the kitchen of our 2013 Escape 19 are 8 1/2" wide.

I found that the Rubbermaid cutlery tray did not fit one of the drawers but did the other, so measure carefully, not all drawers are the same.
