Step Attacked Me!

Never considered myself klutzy, but I nailed my heel on the sharp L metal bracket that supports the step bracket. I was going down barefoot and backed up to hear Susan say something. Glad I had a tetanus in last year or so.

Have put duct tape over it for now. That is a funky deal there

Be careful! You have a lot of hiking (and driving) to do! Great pictures of the Lava cave. Have you been there before? I have never heard of it.
I can't tell what happened to the step. Was it broken?

Yelp, took a grinder to mine and rounded it off after a friend did the same thing on his Escape. It's very sharp and you need to be careful.

Hi Mary- hiking got a little more difficult, but with the right equipment- Leuko tape over a band-aid one can manage

Always wanted to come here- the Wack folk have been since 2001. Little off the beaten path but pretty fine. Not unlike Pinnacles but of course more exotic to us.

I went to the website to check it out. They mentioned there was little cell service. Are you using your booster?

No booster needed; 2 bars 4G w/Verizon. My AT&T spy phone has 1 bar of edge.

As the saying goes, "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me".

I'd noticed that sharp corner already and made a mental note to radius it sometime. After reading about your experience I got off my butt and decided to make the step less hazardous and repaint the frame and step which were badly in need of paint.

Honestly, sometimes I wonder if they just used one spray bomb to paint the whole frame. Seriously, the paint is so thin I was able to strip it just by running a putty knife over it. There's definitely room for improvement in the frame painting department.

Seems any surface that faces forward gets it. I did my step and brackets with Rustoleum last year, already needs it again. Got some POR-15 to try this time.

My frame painting job is one of the areas where I knew they didn't have a Quality Control person. Right after we got home from Orientation in Nov I noticed that there were rust spots coming through the brand new paint on the rear bumper. Also, huge dry spray drips on the rear bumper. Whoever shot the bumper was very inexperienced at painting and then didn't clean up the shoddy work and reshoot it. No one checking behind them as well. I haven't gone underneath yet to look at the frame painting but would imagine I may find more of the same.

OUCH!!!
I noticed that before myself, but never did anything about it. Will check on my new trailer when I get it.

But is duct tape the best thing for a bad scrape?

That stuff should work way better.

True, but have you read the prep instructions? A bit of work.

It does, but like many things, much of the effort is in the prep work, and if it results in a better finished product, it can be well worth it.

I would be more than willing to pay for a better, tougher finish on my trailer frame, which seems to be the weakest link to keeping your trailer looking top notch.

Ron,
I wonder if you are getting some sort of metallic reaction between your metal box and the frame causing premature deterioration?

Can you get the rust off manually before applying Rustoleum or similar, or you just paint that stuff right over? No metal primer?

I have always used a wire brush on a drill on the older Scamp frames prior to shooting the rustoleum. Works pretty well. I'll be redoing the bumper on the new 19 soon with the same process.

Suggest you Google POR 15 and read the prep and prep materials. My understanding you you have to remove all down to bare metal. Then you apply a Prep product for POR 15 and finally you apply the product.
I'm just going to keep touching up with Tremclad.

No metal primer is required. Obviously the more rust you take off the smoother and better the finished appearance. But no grinding down to bare shiny metal is required.

Are we still discussing POR 15 or Rustoleum / Tremclad?

Was the drill a rechargeable one? I prefer to do such things without power tools but that just seems necessary many times. I wonder how well using a brush would work manually. Probably just use sandpaper. I have bought power sanders and such and then don't use them.
